B.C. Conservativist lag Leader Trevor Halford speaks followers john lackland Rustad's resignation
Rustad told reporters here this morning that he decided to resign after speaking with his wife and others close to him last night, despite them urging him to stay on.
His decision comes after months of turmoil within his party, and a day after 20 members of his 39-member caucus signed a letter calling for his removal. Initially, Rustad refused to step down, saying the party’s constitution did not allow for the caucus to eject him as leader.
But on Thursday he said he wanted to avoid a “civil war” in the party.
“Right from the beginning, this could never be about me. If it becomes about me, then I’m here for the wrong reasons,” he said.
Rustad said in a news release Thursday he wanted to assure Conservative supporters that "this was not a hostile takeover by B.C. Liberals."
"We remain a Conservative party, committed to a vision of a common-sense Conservative government in B.C," he said in the release.
Rustad was referring to the former B.C. Liberals, which rebranded to B.C. United, a centre-right party, before merging with the Conservatives before the 2024 election.
John Rustad has announced his resignation as leader of the B.C. Conservative Party at a news conference Thursday morning.
Conservative Caucus of B.C. Members announced Wednesday they no longer had confidence in Rustad and had therefore removed him as leader of the Official Opposition.
Rustad said Thursday he felt staying on as leader would start a civil war within the party.
"I was not prepared to go forward and have that civil war," he said.
