4 places for Royal spotting during King and Queen's visit to Ottawa
King Charles and Queen Camilla's itinerary sheds some light on where you can catch a glimpse of Canada's Royals during the visit to the capital.
Charles and Camilla’s plane will touch down at about 1:15 p.m. ET. They will be greeted at the airport by Gov. Gen. Mary Simon, Prime Minister Mark Carney and his wife Diana Fox Carney.
The royal couple’s first stop will be at Lansdowne Park in Ottawa just before 2 p.m. Where they will meet with members of the community, vendors and local artisans. And just in case the King has forgotten he’s in Canada, he’s scheduled to watch a street hockey game.
Canada's King and Queen will then be whisked off to plant a ceremonial tree on the grounds of Rideau Hall around 2:50 p.m. It’s a tradition that dates to the early 1900s.
They will be joined by the lieutenant-governors and territorial commissioners, his representatives in the provinces and territories.
Those are the two main public events. Charles will also have an audience with both the Governor General and Carney.
I am Briar Stewart in London and I covered the visit by King Charles and Queen Camilla to Canada’s high commission here last week.
I spoke with a British journalist and royal biographer who said not to expect Charles to wade into politics or directly rebuff the 51st state taunts that have been emanating from the White House.
Robert Hardman told me there won’t be any “table-thumping” speeches from the King. The monarchy is supposed to stay above the political fray and Charles is well aware of the boundaries.
Instead, Hardman said, keep an eye out for subtle messaging.
During a state visit to Italy last month, Hardman noted that every time Charles mentioned the Second World War, he specifically mentioned the role of Canadian troops. In March, as U.S. President Donald Trump posted online about how Canadians could avoid higher taxes by joining his country, Charles wore Canadian medals while touring an aircraft carrier, and then, a few days later, planted a maple tree at Buckingham Palace.
Hello. My name is Janet Davison. I’m a senior writer and editor based out of Toronto, and I look after our newsletter that explores royal issues, The Royal Fascinator.
I’ve been talking with royal historians and political scientists for a few weeks now about the significance of King Charles’s first visit here as monarch and seeing him deliver the throne speech in Ottawa.
There’s a general feeling among them that the visit today and tomorrow is an unprecedented outing on multiple fronts that will draw significant international scrutiny.
"Unprecedented for Canada, unprecedented for Charles personally, unprecedented for the Crown and unprecedented for the state of affairs in North America," royal historian Justin Vovk of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., told me.
Vovk and other royal historians have been fielding a flood of media queries from here in Canada and from the U.K., but also from well beyond in the run-up to the visit, reflecting some of that international interest.
We're kicking off our live updates of King Charles and Queen Camilla’s visit ahead of their arrival in Ottawa early this afternoon.
They'll make two public appearances today before Charles delivers the throne speech to open the 45th session of Parliament tomorrow.
It will be a short visit, barely two days, but one that political watchers believe will put a spotlight on Canadian sovereignty in the face of tense relations between Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump, the latter of whom has called for Canada to become the 51st state.
Follow along as our reporters in the capital and elsewhere bring you live updates and analysis of what some are calling a royal visit with unprecedented significance.
