Parliament Winter Session LIVE: Sitharaman takes on Oppn for citing Donald Trump's ‘dead economy’ remark
PArliament Session unrecorded: Finance government minister Nirmala Sitharaman on mon took on the oppositeness for citing US chair Donald Trump's remark that India is a “dead economy”. Sitharaman said India is the fastest-growing major economy, which grew at 8.2 per cent in the September quarter, adding that if India was a 'dead economy' then such upgrades would not have happened. The winter session of Parliament has entered its final week, with the Lok Sabha scheduled to take up obituary references, key committee reports, ministerial statements, Supplementary Demands for Grants for 2025-26, and crucial legislative business on Monday. The Lok Sabha began by paying tributes to three former members of the House -- Subhash Ahuja, Prof. Salahuddin, and Bal Krishna Chauhan -- who passed away in recent times. As soon as the obituary references were over, the members of the treasury benches were on their feet protesting against the alleged threat to the prime minister. The uproar caused it to be adjourned until noon. The Lok Sabha proceedings were again adjourned till 2 PM after opposition uproar.Highlights of the dayThe Lok Sabha passed the first batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants, authorising the government for ₹41,455 crore additional spending in the current fiscal, including over ₹18,000 crore expenditure towards fertiliser subsidy. An additional ₹1,304 crore has been earmarked for additional expenditure by the Department of Higher Education, and ₹225 crore by the Commerce Ministry.Members of the BJP disrupted proceedings over the issue of alleged threatening slogans raised at a Congress rally against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In response, the Congress accused the government of not wanting to run Parliament. The Congress also claimed that the ruling party is rattled by the success of the big rally against alleged vote theft held at Ramlila Maidan here on Sunday, asserting that it is not the culture of the Congress to abuse political opponents."I think they do not want to run Parliament. We have sought a debate on pollution, that also they are not allowing. If you don't want to run Parliament, you should shut it. At least, the cars that we drive will not help spread pollution, all that will not be there," Priyanka Gandhi was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. The Centre and the Opposition also sparred over the bill on replacing MGNREGA, saying erasing Mahatma Gandhi's name shows how "hollow and hypocritical" PM Modi's gestures of paying homage to the Father of the Nation are.The opposition party alleged that the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill, 2025, "attacks the soul" of rights-based guarantee by replacing it with a scheme "stacked against" the states and workers and defies the ideals of Mahatama Gandhi.
