Trump signs bill to release Epstein files
Trump told by Justice Department he was named in Epstein files, reports say
The moment the House voted on releasing the Epstein files
'We worked so hard to get here,' says Epstein survivor
Several celebrities who have not previously been mentioned in the reporting around this case appear in this tranche.
There are photos of Michael Jackson, Diana Ross and Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger with Epstein.
British supermodel Naomi Campbell is also referenced in what appears to be handwritten notes from an interview police conducted with one of Epstein's alleged victims.
Campbell had previously appeared on Epstein's flight logs. She has said she is "sickened" by the sex crimes allegedly committed by the disgraced financier.
According to the note, Campbell went to Epstein's island with "Jean Luc" and "older people."
That's likely a reference to Jean-Luc Brunel, a modelling scout who was close to Epstein and appears to be in a number of the images disseminated today.
Brunel was found dead in a French prison cell in 2022. He was being investigated for allegedly raping minors and trafficking them for exploitation.
This document dump is only a small subset of what the DOJ has at its disposal — and the most prominent person featured in this initial release is former president Bill Clinton.
There are photos of Clinton with Epstein in Brunei, Thailand, Morocco, and on various private jets, according to records contained in this release. It's difficult to ascertain what exactly the two were doing on these trips — there is little context around these photos, but at least some of them feature what appear to be young women.
Clinton has not been accused of wrongdoing by survivors of Epstein's abuse, and he has denied knowledge of the late financier's sex offences.
By comparison, I haven't seen any reference to President Donald Trump in these files, although I’m still sorting through this trove of pictures and data.
The Trump-Epstein relationship was, at one time, quite close. According to Trump’s account, the two had a falling out in the mid-2000s.
The thousands of documents released so far appear to be related to three investigations of Epstein regarding his relations with younger women, according to a review by the New York Times.
There's the 2005 investigation by Palm Beach, Fla., police that was launched after a 14-year-old girl said she was molested at Epstein's mansion.
There's also the investigation that resulted in the 2008 plea deal, in which Epstein pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in jail for soliciting prostitution from someone under the age of 18.
Lastly, there’s the investigation that was related to Epstein’s arrest in 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges.
I searched the DOJ’s files for the terms "Canada" or "Canadian." The only hit was in the fine print of the tag of this Toshiba device, with a product code that indicates it’s part of a laptop.
"Toronto," "Vancouver" and "Calgary" came up in references to massage schools or related businesses mentioned in the book Massage for Dummies, which appears in the evidence file.
One of the documents includes what appears to be part of a handwritten police note suggesting Epstein was looking for girls under 18.
The note reads: “At one point, [REDACTED] witnessed him asking for ID to girl[;] wanted [to] make sure under 18 [because] he wasn’t believing them.
“[Because] [REDACTED] messed up by bringing more older girls."
He said other information that will be redacted or withheld could include anything related to co-operating witnesses.
As mentioned, the legislation to release the Epstein files made it clear that, while there are some exceptions, the DOJ was not allowed to withhold information due to "embarrassment, reputational harm or political sensitivity."
However, many of the documents released have been heavily redacted.
For example, in one batch of 100 documents released, all 100 are blacked out. In another, 53 out of 61 images in a roll of developed film are entirely or mostly blacked out.
There is also a photo of Clinton, Epstein and the late pop star Michael Jackson, who before his death was acquitted of child molestation charges.
I've been sorting through the thousands of Epstein photos released today, and one recurring figure in these images is former U.S. President Bill Clinton.
Clinton is pictured with a number of what appear to be younger women on different occasions, while in Epstein's company. The women’s faces are blacked out.
There's a photo of Clinton partially undressed in a hot tub.
Clinton and Epstein often travelled in the same social circles in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Clinton has not been accused of wrongdoing by survivors of Epstein's abuse, and he has denied knowledge of the late financier's sex offences.
The files also include police notes about various investigations into Epstein, triggered by complaints from young women.
One includes details about a complainant who said she met Epstein when she was 17 in a room at the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles.
He stayed in touch and invited her to his various homes. She alleged that when she was 17, Epstein called her in to give her a massage, putting her “in [a] very uncomfortable situation.”
She said he asked her to take off her shirt, and she recalled not knowing “how to get out of it.”
