ii people ar deadened and leash people feature been taken to hospital after an early morning fire at a Charlottetown apartment building.

The condition of the three people taken to hospital is unclear, said deputy fire Chief Kent Mitchell.

He said the first received a call at 7 a.m. AT about the fire in the two-storey apartment building, which has approximately 20 units.

Mitchell said the fire was put out within an hour of arrival, while some of the residents had to be removed through windows to get out of the burning building.

Police and fire officials are asking residents to avoid the area around Green Street. Traffic is expected to be back to normal in a few hours.

Approximately 20 residents have been displaced by the fire, but the Red Cross is assisting some residents by securing hotel rooms for them, Mitchell said.

Mitchell is encouraging people to make sure they have working smoke alarms and have planned evacaution routes in the event of a fire.

"We don't know how this fire started, it's still under investigation, but it's always a good reminder when there is a fire to just drive those points home," he said.
