Canada, U.S. Want to 'accelerate' trade negotiations: Hillman | Power & Politics
When Trump left the G7 summit unexpectedly early, not all members of his delegation went with him.
According to a White House official speaking on background, key members of the American trade team stayed behind.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett are still at the G7 for meetings.
Details about who they are meeting with — and when — have not been disclosed at this time.
While Canada and the U.S. Announced they are working toward reaching a trade and national security agreement within 30 days, the Americans are also trying to negotiate agreements with the vast majority of its trading partners, including some of those attending the G7.
Standing next to a solemn Zelenskyy, Carney announced a series of new measures to support Ukraine — including what the Prime Minister's Office is billing as a new attempt to target "Russia's shadow fleet and energy revenues" with sanctions.
To further support the Ukrainian war effort, Canada is also chipping in an additional $2 billion in military aid for Ukraine — funding that will help buy more drones, ammunition and armoured vehicles, among other capabilities, the PMO told reporters.
Canada is also extending a $2.3-billion loan to Ukraine to help rebuild its infrastructure and public systems, the PMO said.
I’m Ashley Burke, a senior reporter with the parliamentary bureau, who took the early-morning bus back up to the Kananaskis summit site to watch the latest round of world leaders arrive.
It was a sombre greeting for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; Mark Carney put his hand on Zelenskyy’s shoulder and quietly said something to him that we couldn’t hear.
Overnight, a bombardment of Russian missile and drone strikes hit Ukraine’s capital in the deadliest attack in Kyiv this year. At least 15 people died and dozens more were injured.
Zelenskyy had hoped to meet one-on-one with Donald Trump to push for harsher sanctions against Russia. But that isn’t going to happen, given Trump’s early departure last night, citing the need to tend to the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
Zelenskyy had a serious look on his face as he posed for the cameras beside Carney.
Trump asked about 51st state comments, Canada's potential role in Golden Dome
U.S. President Donald Trump, who was asked as he returned from the G7 summit in Alberta about his repeated claims Canada should be a 51st state, said: 'I think it's a much better deal from Canada, but, you know, it's up to them.' As is, Canada would have to pay 'a lot' of tariffs and to join his proposed missile defence system, Trump said.
Speaking on Air Force One overnight after his early departure from the G7, U.S. President Donald Trump seemingly upped the price if Canada wants to participate in the U.S.’s Golden Dome missile defence system.
“We may make a separate deal on that, by the way,” he said. “They’re going to have to pay a lot of money for the dome … $71 billion.”
He has previously pegged the cost at $61 billion (presumably all in U.S. Dollars) and said Canada can join for free as the 51st state.
Asked whether the topic of the 51st state came up during his visit to Kananaskis, Alta., Trump said: “I think it’s a much better deal from Canada, but it’s up to them.”
Good morning! I’m J.P. Tasker, a reporter travelling with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta.
We were just on hand to watch Mark Rutte, the NATO secretary general, greet Carney before their bilateral meeting this morning here at the picturesque resort that’s playing host to this gathering of the world’s most powerful democratic leaders.
Rutte was clearly impressed by the Rocky Mountain landscape. “This is amazing!” he shouted as he approached the podium where leaders pose for photographs.
The beautiful scenery has been a conversation point all week among members of the foreign delegations — some say they are simply mesmerized by just how majestic it is in this part of Alberta.
U.S. President Donald Trump himself yesterday seemed struck by the landscape, where massive mountains poke out of the forest. “It’s so beautiful,” he said as he greeted Carney at this same spot.
Rutte isn’t here for the mountains alone, of course. The former Dutch prime minister, who has a close relationship with Canada, has been urging NATO allies to step up their defence spending — to meet and exceed the long-standing target of two per cent of GDP.
Carney has committed to that, saying there may be more spending to come to better prepare Canada for an increasingly dangerous world. We’ll see what, if anything, he promises Rutte today on these matters.
Just last week, Rutte warned NATO allies to prepare for war, given global uncertainty.
“History has taught us that to preserve peace, we must prepare for war. Wishful thinking will not keep us safe. We cannot dream away the danger. Hope is not a strategy. So NATO has to become a stronger, fairer and more lethal alliance,” he said in a speech in the U.K.
Good morning. I’m a digital senior producer covering the G7 summit here in Alberta.
Today, the focus of the summit shifts to the leaders of non-G7 countries, including Brazil, India, Mexico, South Korea and, of course, Ukraine. As host of the summit, Prime Minister Mark Carney invited them all here and has one-on-one meetings with each of them.
His first one-on-one today is with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Carney promised earlier this month that Canada would meet NATO’s defence spending benchmark — two per cent of GDP — by the end of this fiscal year.
Carney is scheduled to hold a news conference at 6 p.m. ET today, just before his bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
I’m a producer based in Toronto, and I’ll be helping to curate our live updates from Kananaskis, Alta., today.
