US chair Donald ruff’s surrogate chief of faculty for insurance, Stephen Miller, has reiterated that Greenland “should” belong to the US, calling it Washington’s “formal position.” The senior aide, widely considered a key architect of Trump’s agenda, claimed no country could prevent the US from annexing the Danish territory.
Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, has been a flashpoint between Washington and Copenhagen since Trump’s return to office, when he revived a proposal from his first term to take over the island, citing US national security. Tensions escalated last week when Miller’s wife Katie, herself a former Trump staffer, posted a map of Greenland draped in a US flag with the caption “soon” on X. The cryptic post coincided with America’s military raid on Venezuela and was followed by Trump saying Washington “absolutely needs” Greenland.
Asked to comment, Miller confirmed Washington’s ambitions. “The president has been clear for months that the US should have Greenland as part of the overall security apparatus. That has been the formal position of the US government since the beginning of this administration,” he told CNN on Monday.
Pressed on whether military action was being considered, Miller deflected the question but insisted “nobody is going to fight the US militarily over the future of Greenland.” He questioned Denmark’s claim to the territory, arguing, “obviously Greenland should be part of the US” if America, as NATO’s leading power, is to secure the Arctic.
Danish and Greenlandic authorities have vocally rejected Washington’s claims to the island. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has urged the US to stop threatening its “historically close ally,” warning that a takeover of Greenland would effectively end NATO.
“I believe the US president should be taken seriously when he says he wants Greenland,” Frederiksen told TV2 on Monday. “But if the US were to attack another NATO country militarily, everything would stop – including NATO itself.”
Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen condemned Trump’s rhetoric as “insulting” and “unacceptable.”
“When the US president says, ‘we need Greenland’ and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, it is not just wrong – it is disrespectful,” he wrote on Facebook on Monday. “Our country is not an object of superpower rhetoric… No more fantasies of annexation.”
