Walz said he shared Minnesotans’ anger, but urged people to protest peacefully if they choose to exercise their First Amendment rights.

"They want a show, we can't give it to them. We cannot," he said, illustrating his earlier comment that the Trump administration is "governing by reality TV."

"We can't give them what they want."

In a message that echoed the sentiments of Minneapolis's mayor, Walz was blunt in his comments to U.S. Federal officials.

"From here on, I have a very simple message: We do not need any further help from the federal government," he said.

"To Donald Trump and Kristi Noem: You've done enough."

Walz called the actions of the Trump administration reckless and said he had been warning for weeks that its 'dangerous, sensationalized operations' in Minneapolis were a threat to public safety.

'What we're seeing is the consequences of governance designed to generate fear, headlines and conflict,' he said.

"It's governing by reality TV, and today that recklessness cost someone their life."

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is holding a news conference soon to speak about the shooting. Walz had previously made clear his concerns about ICE's presence in Minneapolis.

A large crowd has started to gather near the scene of the shooting, which is less than two kilometres from the location where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020. People are shouting and holding up signs that say "shame" and "you cannot silence all of us."

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, which controls ICE, confirmed the shooting death, but pinned the blame on the woman who was killed.

In a statement, DHS said "rioters" began blocking ICE officers who were conducting targeted operations when "one of these violent rioters weaponized her vehicle, attempting to run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them."

"An ICE officer, fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots," the statement added.

The woman "was hit and is deceased."

Frey did not mince words when addressing the fatal shooting at a news conference earlier today, pushing back against ICE's assertion that it was an act of self-defence.

"Having seen the video myself, I wanna tell everybody directly, that is bulls--t," the mayor said.

Frey said there were dozens, if not hundreds, of ICE and federal officers there at the time.

"Having them there was only causing more chaos, having them there was only making a difficult situation even more problematic — and one that, yes, they created themselves," he said.

"There's little that I can say, again, that would make this situation better. But I do have a message for our community, for our city, and I have a message for ICE: get the f--k out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here."

A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday during an immigration crackdown, prompting the city's mayor to call for federal agents to leave the city.

Federal officials have claimed the shooting was an act of self-defence and that the woman "attempted to run them over and rammed them with her vehicle."

But Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey blasted that characterization and the federal deployment of more than 2,000 ICE officers in the Twin Cities, according to The Associated Press.

"They are not here to cause safety in this city. What they are doing is not to provide safety in America. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust," Frey said.
