Lisa Gilbert, the co-president of Public Citizen, one of the organizations behind today's protests, said these demonstrations are not anti-law enforcement.

Instead, she said they are about calling for an end to ICE's "systematic power of abuse," as well as transparency, accountability and an independent investigation into Good's death.

Protests are underway now in cities from New York to Boston, and Washington, D.C.

Outside the White House, demonstrators gathered in the rain to protest ICE operations before making their way down the street holding signs bearing Renee Good's picture and slogans such as "ICE out now!" and "Trump must go now," while chanting "ICE out, for good."

As the march gets underway, people on the ground say they want ICE out of the city and they're angry about the rift between federal investigators and state officials in Minnesota.

Minnesota and Hennepin County law enforcement authorities said yesterday they were opening their own criminal inquiry into Good's death, separate from the FBI's investigation, as officials offered vastly different characterizations of the shooting.

Hundreds of people are streaming into Minneapolis's Powderhorn Park for a demonstration and march, just a few blocks east of the location where Good was shot. It is frigid here at -6 C, but organizers are handing out handwarmers. Already, it appears safety marshals are escorting one person to another part of the park after people seemed concerned about their behaviour.

Many of today's protests are called "ICE Out For Good," repeating the acronym for the federal agency. The events are organized by Indivisible, the same social organization that put together protests in all 50 states last year.

Event listings urge participants to stay peaceful, obey the law and "de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values." They say weapons are not allowed.

The demonstrations taking place today are just the latest in a wave of protests across the United States pushing back against federal immigration sweeps.

While many demonstrations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have been peaceful, others led to clashes with police and hundreds of arrests.

Los Angeles was the site of some of the largest protests last June, where tensions boiled over after Trump's extraordinary deployment of the National Guard without authorization from the state's governor.

That led to clashes with law enforcement, with protestors blocking off a major freeway and setting self-driving cars on fire as law enforcement used tear gas, rubber bullets and flash bangs to control the crowd.

Protests over federal immigration enforcement raids were also held in several other major U.S. Cities that month, including in New York City, Philadelphia and Seattle.

ICE agent’s phone video shows his view of deadly Minneapolis shooting

As duelling narratives continue over the fatal shooting of Minneapolis woman Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, a new video shows the encounter from the officer’s perspective — including footage of Good appearing to turn the steering wheel and driving forward before the officer opened fire.

New video filmed by the ICE officer who shot Good revealed a different angle of the interaction yesterday, including some of the driver's last words before the shooting.

While the new video provided more detail about the interaction between the officer and the driver in the moments before the shooting, it did not seem to change existing opinions about whether the officer's response was justified.

The White House said the footage confirmed the officer fired in self-defence as the driver tried to hit him with her car.

Frey, the city's mayor, urged people protesting today to keep the peace. He said illegal behaviour would play into the Trump administration's hands.

"We will not counter Donald Trump's chaos with our own brand of chaos. He wants us to take the bait," Frey said, adding that police would arrest anyone damaging property or otherwise breaking the law.

Halima Ahmed came to Minnesota in 1993. She calls the state her home and its people her family.

"There is no Black and white people in Minnesota ... We no separate. Everyone [is] the same in Minnesota," she told me.

Ahmed says she cried when she heard about Good, who was a mother of three.

"She left behind kids," she said.

Asked about the impact of immigration enforcement on Minneapolis streets, Frey said ICE was using "buckshot tactics" that are scattered, unplanned and reckless.

"This is not a co-ordinated, strategic plan that is being carried out," Frey said.

The police chief added that there are oftentimes what appear to be arrests made where people are taken from their vehicles — with the vehicles abandoned in the street.

In at least one case, the vehicle was not even placed in park, which meant police officers had to respond and have it towed, O'Hara said.
