Skarsgård’s win is his second Golden Globe, and only his second career nomination. His last win was for his turn in the series Chernobyl; in Sentimental Value he plays a largely emotionally absent father who chooses his art over his children.

In his speech, he spoke to the importance of the theatrical experience: "Hopefully you'll see it in a cinema," he said. "Cinema should be seen in cinemas."

The win was something of an upset; after One Battle After Another's Teyana Taylor won the night's first award, her co-stars Benicio del Toro and Sean Penn were beaten out in this category.

Teyana Taylor won her first Golden Globe for her supporting role in One Battle After Another.

She delivered this message with her acceptance speech: "To my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight … our voices matter and our dreams deserve space."

The winner for best male supporting actor in a motion picture is Stellan Skarsgård, for his work in Sentimental Value.

Also nominated were:

The winner for best female supporting actor in a motion picture, the first Golden Globe of the night, goes to Teyana Taylor, for One Battle After Another.

Also nominated were:

Nikki Glaser kicked off the show saying, "Yes, the Golden Globes: without a doubt the most important thing that’s happening in the world right now."

She didn't hold back on referencing current affairs, saying "the Golden Globe for best editing goes to the Justice Department" and "the award for most editing goes to CBS News."

Given the Globes' dual focus on both television and film, a few stars stand to take home multiple trophies.

Among them is Amanda Seyfried, up for both best actress (musical or comedy) for The Testament of Ann Lee, and best actress (limited series) for Long Bright River. Seyfried previously won a Globe in 2023 for her turn in The Dropout, but did not attend those awards specifically to finish filming Ann Lee.

Then there's Jeremy Allen White, nominated for best actor (drama) for Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere and best actor (comedy or musical) for the series The Bear. He has three Globe wins already, all for The Bear.

And there's Jacob Elordi, competing for best supporting actor (motion picture) for playing the monster in Frankenstein, and best actor (limited series) for his role in the Narrow Road to the Deep North. They are his first Golden Globe nominations.

You might be wondering: what's up with KPop Demon Hunters being left off the best musicals nominations, and where is this year's biggest box office musical performer, Wicked: For Good?

It’s complicated. While it's true that for a few decades, animated movies couldn't compete outside that category, the controversy-laden voting body changed that rule in 2021. Even still, they haven't nominated an animated movie for best musical or comedy since 2004 (The Incredibles).

Breaking that streak now would have been especially hard, given that usually slightly-less-competitive category boasts some of the biggest movies of the year (Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another) and some surprise critical darlings (No Other Choice, Blue Moon).

As for Wicked: For Good, the less-than-impressed voting body didn't award the more successful first outing for best musical, or nominate Jon M. Chu for a directing award, at the ceremony last year.

Instead, both films are up for other awards this year — including the consolation trophy of cinematic and box office achievement. This is perhaps especially odd in KPop's case, given the fact that it was a limited-release streaming movie for which Netflix did not report grosses.

Even given the new spotlight on podcasting, the Golden Globes didn't exactly unilaterally embrace the format.

The initial long list was generated through the somewhat-empirical process of Luminate Data calculating the top 25 most popular and financially successful podcasts. But the eventual short list showed a clear preference: only one news-focused show (Up First from NPR) made the final cut, and not a single overtly political podcast was nominated.

That included bumping popular news shows, from the New York Times’ The Daily to the left-leaning Pod Save America.

At the same time, conservative podcasts were completely shut out: The Megyn Kelly Show, The Tucker Carlson Show, Candace (hosted by Candace Owens) and The Ben Shapiro Show were all snubbed — despite Shapiro taking out billboards in Times Square to campaign.

And potentially most notably of all, The Joe Rogan Experience — consistently cited as the No. 1 podcast in the world — also failed to score a nod.

Movie over, film and TV — there's a new player in the awards game. The Golden Globes added a fresh category for best podcast this year, expanding the range of content celebrated during the ceremony.

While more digital-focused award shows like the Webbys and the Shortys have recognized podcasting in the past, this is the first major awards show to recognize the format.

The barrier to entry? Podcasts need original content and at least six episodes (of at least 30 minutes) be put out between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, 2025. The initial list of 25 eligible podcasts was narrowed down to six nominations.

But the new category is not without controversy. More on that from my colleague Jackson shortly.

The Golden Globes may hand out trophies — but winners and presenters will also take home one of the most valuable gift bags in the award show's history.

According to the Golden Globes, winners and presenters will walk away with an "ultimate gift bag" valued at nearly $1 million US — but not everyone gets the same haul.

The bag — a suede Atlas signature duffel bag designed specifically for the Globes — actually acts like a high-end shopping list: inside, A-listers will find the "ultimate gift book," where they can call dibs on the biggest items up for grabs.

We're talking anything from a $70,000 stay at an undersea villa in the Maldives, to a $210,000 collection of rare French wines — some being offered on a limited first-come, first-served basis.

One of the items that is guaranteed for everyone? Brad Pitt's skincare routine.
