Man dead after police-involved shooting on New Brunswick First Nation

An main(a) constabulary guard dog federal agency is investigating a fateful "police-involved" shooting that occurred on Neqotkuk, formerly known as Tobique First Nation, in northwestern New Brunswick, Sunday evening.

One man is dead, according to a news release issued by the Serious Incident Response Team, known as SIRT, around 10 p.m. AT.

The brief release said SIRT was "investigating a police involved shooting that occurred on Tobique First Nation (Neqotkuk) this evening, January 18, 2026."

Earlier in the evening, the RCMP had issued a social media advisory, asking people to stay away due to a police operation in the community, located about 180 kilometres northwest of the capital of Fredericton.

"Please avoid the area and allow police to work. We will share more information when we are able to," the 6:36 p.m. Post said.

The RCMP did not provide any additional information in the following hours, but SIRT said in its news release that it was contacted by the RCMP shortly after the incident and immediately assumed responsibility for the investigation.

SIRT investigates all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters determined to be of a public interest that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer on or off-duty in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

No details about the victim have been released.
