Judge gets the intentional walk from Brendon Little, the Jays’ fifth pitcher of the night.
On the next play, right fielder Anthony Santander dives but can’t make the catch on a sinking line drive by Cody Bellinger.
A sacrifice fly follows, and it’s 9-6 Yankees.
And here comes another pitching change.
Prior to this series, the Jays have not played the Yankees in the post-season.
That’s because when the Jays made the playoffs between 1985 and 1993, there was a different setup for those series, with one team per division going to the post-season. Since the Blue Jays and Yankees are in the same division, there wasn’t a path to a post-season matchup.
In more recent post-season runs, Toronto didn’t play New York. In 2023, the Minnesota Twins swept Toronto out of the wildcard round, and the Seattle Mariners did the same the year before. The Tampa Bay Rays swept Toronto from the wildcard round in 2020.
In 2016, the Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles in a wildcard game, then swept the Texas Rangers in the ALDS. Cleveland knocked Toronto out in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
In 2015, the Jays bested the Rangers in the ALDS (You may recall slugger José Bautista’s epic bat flip in Game 5), but Toronto then lost the ALCS to the Kansas City Royals, who went on to win the World Series that year.
The Yankees score again to make it 8-6, but the inning ends on a play at second.
If you’re a Jays fan, insert expletive here.
But don’t count them out. One of the big storylines of this season has been the Jays’ ability to come back — sometimes even late in the game.
They’ll have to do the same tonight if they want to sweep the Yankees.
It’s also looking increasingly likely that both managers will be emptying their bullpens tonight. That could be a bigger problem for the Jays, who will be turning to a lot of the same pitchers if there’s a Game 4 tomorrow.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. Absolutely obliterates a pitch and homers to right field.
The Yankees have seized the lead.
A huge diving catch by Aaron Judge saves a run and keeps the game tied.
I should probably be wearing a heart rate monitor while covering this game.
They’re American — and rooting for the Jays
Canadian Blue Jays fans, American Yankees fans — but what about American Jays fans?
Yes, they exist, and a bunch of them came out from across the U.S. For Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.
There’s been a lot of good in what's been a wild game — and we're not even halfway through — but losing that lead sure feels deflating.
Case for optimism: The Blue Jays are facing the Yankees bullpen, so should be able to score more runs.
Case for pessimism: Aaron Judge.
Welp, guess you could see that coming. Tie ball game.
The Yankees superstar delivers and the Bronx fans are losing it.
Addison Barger drops a pop up — perhaps troubled by the wind we’ve been hearing about on the broadcast.
Nerves. Nerves.
Vladdy rips a single into left field, but Yankees relief pitcher Camilo Doval gets Kirk to ground out to end the inning.
The Yankees using Doval — one of their best relievers — at this point in the game shows you how desperate they are to hang in.
