'The old order is not coming back': PM says Canada must 'name reality' and build strength at home

DAVOS SPEECH | Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, says Canada is engaging strategically and 'with open eyes' as the international orders shifts, forcing middle powers to adapt as they face a 'rupture' in global systems.

Shortly before Trump's White House speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a bold address at Davos, calling on "middle powers" like Canada to unite in the face of a rupturing world order.

Carney identified a new era afoot in which large powers are more likely to prey on smaller ones. Many countries are realizing they must now rely on themselves, Carney noted.

"But let us be clear-eyed about where this leads. A world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable," he said.

"Middle powers must act together because if we're not at the table, we're on the menu."

The speech received a standing ovation and caught the attention of international media.

The prime minister is leaving Switzerland Wednesday morning and may not cross paths with Trump. He will be attending a cabinet retreat in Quebec City shortly.

Markets plunge, allies rattled after Trump's new Greenland threats

Global stocks fell after U.S. President Donald Trump made new threats to take Greenland by force during a long press conference. Asked how far he’d go, Trump replied, ‘You’ll find out.’ The threats came just hours after he shared an AI-generated image of both Canada and Greenland covered in the U.S. Flag.

Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. President celebrated the anniversary of his Jan. 20 inauguration with a long speech in the White House press briefing room, where he read off a list of 365 points his administration labelled accomplishments.

There were three mentions of Canada:

U.S. President Donald Trump is in Davos, Switzerland, joining world leaders at the World Economic Forum today. He landed in Zurich overnight after an earlier flight on Air Force One had to turn around due to a minor electrical problem.

Trump will deliver a speech to the forum shortly.
