Markets plunge, allies rattled after Trump's new Greenland threats

I'm Briar Stewart, a foreign correspondent based in London.

In his speech, Trump turned to briefly talk about Ukraine, although he quickly became sidetracked as he started talking about how its war with Russia would never have started if he was president in 2022.

The subject of Ukraine and the state of negotiations has faded from the radar as of late because of all the talk around Trump's determination to acquire Greenland.

However, Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner plan to meet Putin in Moscow on Thursday.

Trump said he plans to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy later today, although it doesn't appear that Zelenskyy is in Davos.

Trump said that last month 31,000 soldiers died in the Russia-Ukraine war and that 27,000 died the month before that. It is not clear where he got those numbers from, as both Russia and Ukraine do not usually disclose battlefield casualties.

Hi, I'm J.P. Tasker, a reporter in the parliamentary bureau.

Trump just took a shot at Prime Minister Mark Carney, who delivered a provocative speech of his own yesterday in Davos where he said the U.S.-led, rules-based international order is over and middle powers like Canada must pivot.

Trump made it clear he wasn't pleased with what he heard from Carney.

Speaking directly to "Mark," Trump said: "Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements."

That's an apparent reference to the military protection the U.S. Provides to the continent.

On the proposed "golden dome," a U.S. Missile defence system, Trump said it will cover Canada due to geography.

"Canada gets a lot of freebies. They should be grateful but they're not."

He said Carney "wasn't so grateful" when the prime minister spoke in Switzerland Tuesday.

Continuing to speak about Greenland, Trump said only the U.S. "can protect this giant mass of land, this giant piece of ice, develop it and improve it and make it so that it's good for Europe and safe for Europe and good for us."

He said he was once again seeking "immediate negotiations" to acquire Greenland and that the U.S. Has been treated "very unfairly by NATO."

After Europe, Trump asked, "Would you like me to say a few words of Greenland?" to an audible laugh and murmur from the crowd.

The U.S. President said that while he has "tremendous respect for both the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark," he believes the European nation and independent territory cannot defend itself.

He called Greenland "a big piece of ice.… It's hard to call it land."

Trump said that in the Second World War, Denmark fell to Germany in "six hours of fighting and was totally unable to defend either itself or Greenland, so the U.S. Was then compelled … at great cost and expense" to do so.

He said the U.S. "gave Greenland back" after the war. "How stupid were we to do that?" he said.

"How ungrateful are they now? So now our country and the world face much greater risks than they did before because of missiles, because of nuclear, because of weapons of warfare that I can't even talk about," he said.

"I don't have to use force. I don't want to use force. I won't use force," Trump said.

Trump is largely sticking to the teleprompter text of the speech, with far less of his off-the-cuff rambling than he typically injects into his speeches.

The energy in his voice, however, is pretty low. To be fair, he just got off an overnight red-eye flight from the U.S. That was delayed by three hours. And he was up late the previous night, posting AI-generated taunts on social media, including that map showing the U.S. Flag over the territory of Venezuela, Greenland and Canada.

Trump took a couple vague swipes at Europe off the top of his remarks, saying the continent is "not heading in the right direction" and that it is "not recognizable" in "certain places," blaming those things in part on "mass migration."

He later spoke of his own European heritage: "I mean, look, I am derived from Europe. Scotland and Germany. Hundred per cent Scotland, my mother; hundred per cent German, my father," the president said. "We believe deeply in the bonds we share with Europe. As a civilization, I want to see it do great."

He called for a "strong and united West."

"It's horrible what they've done to themselves," he said.

Carney warns allies to act together or be ‘on the menu’ of great powers

In a bold speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Prime Minister Mark Carney warned allies the ‘old order is not coming back,’ and that middle powers must work together or end up ‘on the menu’ of great powers weaponizing economic integration.

I'm Ashley Burke, a senior reporter with the parliamentary bureau. I'm with the Canadian journalists in Switzerland, travelling with the prime minister to report on his trip.

Carney has left Davos without talking or interacting with Donald Trump, the Prime Minister's Office confirms.

The prime minister took off from the World Economic Forum around the same time Donald Trump arrived by helicopter.

I was standing outside in Quarten, Switzerland after doing a live TV hit when I saw a group of helicopters buzzing past in the sky, as the U.S. President made his way from Zurich to Davos.

Asked this morning why Carney and his delegation are leaving before Trump's speech, Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu told us it came down to logistics.

"Well there's things to do back in Canada," Sidhu said. "As you know, Parliament's resuming on Monday. We have our cabinet retreat and there's things that we’ve got to take care of for Canadians."

Sidhu said the delegation he was part of did what it wanted to do in Davos including meeting with industry leaders who will be visiting Canada.

Trump is speaking now. He started by touting the U.S. Economy.

"When America booms, the whole world booms," he said.

'The old order is not coming back': PM says Canada must 'name reality' and build strength at home

DAVOS SPEECH | Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, says Canada is engaging strategically and 'with open eyes' as the international orders shifts, forcing middle powers to adapt as they face a 'rupture' in global systems.

Shortly before Trump's White House speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a bold address at Davos, calling on "middle powers" like Canada to unite in the face of a rupturing world order.

Carney identified a new era afoot in which large powers are more likely to prey on smaller ones. Many countries are realizing they must now rely on themselves, Carney noted.

"But let us be clear-eyed about where this leads. A world of fortresses will be poorer, more fragile, and less sustainable," he said.

"Middle powers must act together because if we're not at the table, we're on the menu."

The speech received a standing ovation and caught the attention of international media.

The prime minister is leaving Switzerland Wednesday morning and may not cross paths with Trump. He will be attending a cabinet retreat in Quebec City shortly.

Markets plunge, allies rattled after Trump's new Greenland threats

Global stocks fell after U.S. President Donald Trump made new threats to take Greenland by force during a long press conference. Asked how far he’d go, Trump replied, ‘You’ll find out.’ The threats came just hours after he shared an AI-generated image of both Canada and Greenland covered in the U.S. Flag.

Tuesday afternoon, the U.S. President celebrated the anniversary of his Jan. 20 inauguration with a long speech in the White House press briefing room, where he read off a list of 365 points his administration labelled accomplishments.
