Best traditional country album, on the other hand, carries a fair share of controversy. The new award sits alongside best contemporary country album, which has been renamed from best country album.
This decision quickly drew criticism from fans, many of whom accused the Recording Academy of acting in response to Beyoncé's best country album win for Cowboy Carter last year. She was the first Black female artist to win in the category, and one of only two Black artists to be nominated for the award.
The Academy maintains it changes its guidelines each year to align with "the ever-changing music industry," and the move is about inclusion.
"This action by our members now opens the door for us to celebrate more artists and a wider range of music," CEO Harvey Jay Mason Jr said in a statement.
Country singer Zach Top’s Ain't In It For My Health won the traditional country album Grammy earlier today.
There are two fresh categories at this year's Grammy Awards: best album cover and best traditional country album.
They're both pretty interesting additions, for very different reasons.
Best album cover has been reinstated after a 53-year hiatus. And, honestly, it makes a ton of sense right now. Album artwork is so deeply tied to a project's identity and the success of its rollout.
It does seem especially interesting in an era where artists frequently drop multiple cover variants — a strategy that can boost album sales but also runs the risk of diluting a project's visual identity.
Rapper Tyler, The Creator’s album cover for CHROMAKOPIA was named the winner.
Carpenter, nominated for six Grammys tonight, wowed in a pretty, tiered confection by Valentino. A highlight here is the sweet, sheer cape that just covers her shoulders.
Going into this evening, two of Canada's biggest pop stars were nominated for awards — but both missed out on nabbing any hardware.
Tate McRae received her first nomination for dance pop recording for her upbeat track Just Keep Watching, featured on the F1 movie soundtrack. The Grammy went to Lady Gaga’s edgy hit Abracadabra instead.
Drake was up for one Grammy for best melodic pop performance, but lost to his foe Kendrick Lamar, who won with his duet with SZA, luther.
The Push 2 Start singer, who recently attended her first couture show in Paris, walked the carpet in an embellished halterneck gown with a dramatic feathered train.
The vintage look is by Dsquared2, which is designed by Canadian twins Dean and Dan Caten.
Already a cinematic legend, filmmaker Steven Spielberg entered even more rarefied air on Sunday.
Off his first ever nomination, the director won his first Grammy during the pre-televised premiere ceremony segment. That makes him one of the world’s few artists to achieve EGOT status.
An EGOT is defined as having won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony, which only 21 people before Spielberg have accomplished.
Spielberg already has four Primetime Emmys, three Oscars and one Tony.
His win tonight came from producing Music by John Williams, a documentary about the composer that won best music film.
"This acknowledgment is obviously deeply meaningful to me because it validates what I have known for over 50 years: John Williams's influence on culture and music is immeasurable and his artistry and legacy is unrivaled," Spielberg said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
K-pop has made its Grammys breakthrough. Golden, the smash hit by HUNTR/X from the wildly successful film KPop Demon Hunters, won the award for best song written for visual media.
It’s a big year for the South Korean pop genre, with multiple acts nominated in several major categories.
Most notably, Golden and APT. by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars are the first songs by K-pop artists to be nominated for song of the year, while APT. also has a nod for record of the year.
The first K-pop group to get a Grammy nod was BTS in 2021.
Several other Canadians have already bagged some hardware during the Grammy premiere ceremony.
Justin Gray, a bassist, composer and sound engineer from Toronto, took home his first ever Grammy for best immersive audio album with his record, Immersed.
"Music is a gift we all share," Gray said after accepting the award.
Folk music legend Joni Mitchell won for best historical album with Joni Mitchell Archives – Volume 4: The Asylum Years (1976-1980).
Sinners, which took home the Grammy for best compilation soundtrack for visual media, also has a Canadian connection: Peter Dreimanis from Toronto rock band July Talk starred in the film as a vampire and also performed several songs on the soundtrack.
Montreal audio mixing engineer Serban Ghenea has six nods, as he looks to extend his lead as the Canadian with the most Grammys ever.
Going into the ceremony, he already had 23 golden gramophones — and he's won one more tonight in the premiere ceremony, for best dance pop recording (for Abracadabra).
He's also nominated for record of the year (Abracadabra, APT. And Sabrina Carpenter's Manchild) and album of the year (Mayhem and Carpenter's Man's Best Friend).
Ottawa-born producer Cirkut, a.k.a. Henry Walter, is the most nominated Canadian at this year's awards, with seven — and he's already won two of those, for best dance pop recording (for Lady Gaga's Abracadabra.)
After accepting his award in the premiere ceremony he gave a heartfelt speech thanking his family, friends and the artists he worked with — and also shouted out his roots.
"Once upon a time I was a kid from Canada making beats in my bedroom, and now here I am," he said.
Cirkut is also nominated in the big three categories: album of the year (for Lady Gaga's Mayhem), song of the year (for Lady Gaga's Abracadabra and APT. by ROSÉ and Bruno Mars), and record of the year (Abracadabra and APT. again). His last nomination is for producer of the year, non-classical.
