Japanese snowboarders, Kira Kimura and Ryoma Kimata, were one and two for gold and silver in the snowboard big air final. Su Yiming of China takes home the bronze medal.
Quebec's Francis Jobin finished in seventh place after throwing down in his final two runs.
The Canadian is in seventh place after sticking a double backside rodeo 1440 — the first time this trick has been performed in Olympic qualifiers or competition.
But it wasn’t enough for the judges to keep him in the podium hunt. The 27-year-old touched his hand down in the landing. His final score was 65.50, for a best-of-two combined total of 149.50.
Three riders remain in the final run.
Though their jumps initially put them in contention to medal, by the end of the final round, Maurer and Strate's scores landed them 18th and 11th, respectively.
Norway's Anna Odine Stroem will take home gold with a total score of 267.3 points after jumping 101 metres in the final round.
Nika Prevc of Slovenia takes silver with a combined 266.2 points, while Japan's Nozomi Maruyama earned bronze with a combined 261.8 points.
Abigail Strate, widely seen as the Canadian to watch in this event, jumped 95.5 metres in the final round to land in 1st place. But that top position was not to last: she was just bumped down to 2nd by Germany's Selina Freitag.
Maurer just jumped 96.5 metres in the final round of the women's normal hill ski jump event, earning 110.3 points for a total combined score of 226.6 points.
That initially earned her 2nd place in the final, but she later was bumped out of the top three by Japan's Yuki Ito (who scored 111.3 points this round for a total score of 228.6) and Germany's Katharina Schmid (with 234.1 points).
Jobin, 27, stuck the landing of his switch double backside double rodeo 1260 in his second run of the men’s big air final in Livigno, Italy.
He scored 84.00, but it’s not enough to send him within podium contention. He’s currently sitting in eighth.
He has one more shot at it.
Canada's Nicole Maurer is No. 12 to jump, with Abigail Strate to go No. 19 in this round.
That said, Peterman and Gallant have come up empty-handed in their last two trips to the worlds.
In 2022, they went 8-1 in group play before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Norway. Last spring in Fredericton, they went 7-2 before getting knocked out right away by Estonia and then losing a ranking game to the United States to finish sixth.
Meet Canada's top mixed doubles curling team
Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant are a married couple from Chestermere and they're gearing up to earn a spot competing for Canada in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.
Jocelyn Peterman, 32, and Brett Gallant, 35, first got together in 2016 when Gallant asked her to be his partner for the Canadian mixed doubles championship. They were married in 2022 and had a son the following year.
So, chemistry shouldn't be an issue. Nor should a lack of Olympic experience: they both competed in 2022 in Beijing with their four-person teams at the time — Peterman with Jennifer Jones, Gallant with the Brad Gushue rink that won the men's bronze. They also happen to be the last Canadian duo to win a medal at the mixed doubles world championship, taking silver in 2019.
Canadian Francis Jobin dropped in switch in his first run of the men’s big air snowboard final in Livigno on Saturday night.
The 26-year-old from Lac Beauport, Que., performed a backside double cork 1260, but struggled with the landing. Still, he managed to come out of it on his feet, but it cost him points with the judges.
He put up a score of 37.25 in his Olympic debut at the Milano-Cortina Games. He’ll now focus on laying down some big tricks in his remaining two runs.
