Thanks for joining us for an action-packed Day 1 of the Winter Games.

Canada has one medal coming home in women’s 3,000-metre long-track speed skating: 🥉.

If you’re going to watch one thing from today’s events, don’t miss Valérie Maltais's moment 🥹 — 35 years in the making.

If you've been one of the many paying attention to Canadian figure skater Madeline Schizas's posts about life at the 2026 Olympics, you might be wondering whether she's going to get an extension on that sociology homework.

She posted a photo of an email she sent her sociology professor at Western University, asking for an extension and providing a news release as proof of her Olympics participation.

"I was competing in the Olympic Games yesterday and thought the reflection was due Sunday, not Friday," Schizas wrote to her professor.

She told our colleagues she hasn't heard back yet, but didn't expect a response since it's Saturday.

"I mean, I kind of am just shooting my shot on this one," she said, laughing.

In conversation with 🇨🇦 Maddie Schizas, who has become an internet sensation at the Olympics.

Here’s her answer about her reaction for to her score in the short.

And tells me that she hasn’t heard back from her professor after asking for an extension. Also this afternoon, thousands of protesters clashed with police in Milan while athletes were competing. The confrontation happened after a peaceful march against the environmental impact of the Games and the presence of U.S. Agents in Italy, according to Reuters.

There was no indication that the protest and resulting road closure interfered with the Games or athletes' travel to their events, Reuters reported.

Lajoie and Lagha finish 3rd in team free dance to keep Canada in medal contention

Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha finished in third place in the Olympic figure skating team event free dance, keeping Canada in fourth place overall.

Over to figure skating for a moment. Canada's Marjorie Lajoie and Zachary Lagha finished third in the free dance segment of the figure skating team event.

Their performance keeps Canada in fourth place overall, just two points behind Italy — which means they get a chance to compete for a medal tomorrow as one of the top five countries.

The team event's pairs skate starts at 1:30 p.m. ET, followed by the individual women's and men's skates.

Canada’s power play made the difference in a 4-0 win over Switzerland in the team's Olympic opener. Three goals came on the advantage, from Natalie Spooner, Sarah Fillier and Julia Gosling. Daryl Watts added a fourth goal at even strength.

Canada outshot the Swiss 55-6, with Swiss goaltender Saskia Maurer standing on her head for this one. I’ll have an analysis story on our website shortly.

Next up for Canada: the physical Czechs on Monday. Should be a good one.

In her Olympic debut, Watts scores at the end of the third to clinch a 4-0 victory for Team Canada. The Toronto Sceptres forward came to Italy as the second PWHL player to score 50 points in the league this season, behind Poulin.

Canada has struck on the power play for the third time tonight. This time, it’s Brianne Jenner with the goal on the second power-play unit.

Jenner’s been having a great season with the PWHL's Ottawa Charge. This is her fourth Olympic Games.

The score reads 2-0, but Canada has controlled much of this game. With half of the third period to go, Canada is outshooting the Swiss 40-4.

It’s been a big night for Swiss goaltender Saskia Maurer and the Swiss team as a whole. They’ve been blocking a ton of shots.

Canadian forward Sarah Fillier makes it 2-0 against the Swiss on a third-period power play.

That’s two power play goals for Canada tonight. That’s good news: it’s an area where the Canadians struggled in the recent Rivalry Series against the U.S.

Renata Fast and Daryl Watts earned assists on the goal. Canada’s been outshooting Switzerland all game long, now to the tune of 37-3.

Canada leads Switzerland in shots on net, 32-3.
