With one event to go, Canada finds itself in fifth position with 47 points — and out of reach of a medal, after the women's singles free program segment. Canada's Stephen Gogolev will skate the men's free program to close out the competition.
Japan's Kaori Sakamoto is the final woman to skate. A three-time world champion, Sakamoto delivered the most sophisticated and polished performance of the women's singles event.
Her final score: 148.62. A first-place finish that earns Japan 10 points in the overall rankings. Japan and the U.S. Are now tied for first with 59 points heading into the final segment of the team final, the men's free skate.
The American made her Olympic debut in the team event skating to a medley of I Will Find You and The Return with a few technical mistakes on her jumping passes, but still earning a score of 138.62.
The skater looked visibly disappointed as her performance moved her into second place in the women's single event. Japan's Kaori Sakamoto will be the last to perform in the free program.
Team USA currently sits in first with 59 points.
Skating to the ominous music from Jaws! A fairly clean skate, but she turned a planned triple jump into a double and had a few other technical elements downgraded by the judges. Final score 126.94. She moves into second place for the time being with two competitors remaining in the women's singles competition of the team final.

It's been a rough couple days for Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant, the married duo from Alberta who make up Canada's mixed doubles curling team.
The pair have just posted their 5th straight loss, ending any podium chances and officially putting them out of playoff contention.
The pair started the tournament 3-0, then lost to the U.S., Great Britain, Estonia, Sweden and now South Korea.
Canadian Madeline Schizas will be skating in the women's free skate shortly.
The 22-year-old McMaster University student from Oakville, Ont., is known for her deadpan sense of humour. She's been posting on social media about life at the 2026 Olympics, including one where she shows a photo of an email she sent her sociology professor, asking for an extension and providing a news release as proof of her Olympics participation.
Well, we have an update: Schizas got her extension.
"Since it seems everyone was quite invested, I did get my extension lol," she wrote, updating followers. "I can't believe anyone cared so much 😭."
Schizas is set to graduate from McMaster in May.

Lia Pereira and Trennt Michaud scored 134.42 points, but finished in last place in the Olympic figure skating team pairs free program.
Heading into the women's and men's free skate, here are the standings in the figure skating team final:
Canada is in 5th place out of the five final nations with 41 points, tied with Georgia but behind on the tiebreaker.
Just two points separate first place USA (51 points) and second place Japan (49 points). Italy is third with 45 points.
First place competitor or competitors in each category earns 10 points, second earns nine points, and so on in the overall rankings.
Canada's Madeline Schizas skates first in the women's free skate, and is up next. The podium is still within striking distance for Canada, but mistakes will have to be kept to a minimum.
