Canada's men's hockey team practiced hard for nearly 90 minutes at the Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, in contrast to the U.S. Team's relatively short and light workout earlier in the evening.

Connor McDavid, Tom Wilson and Macklin Celebrini are likely to make up the starting top line.

Head coach Jon Cooper said that he'd talked to players and their NHL coaches for the last several weeks, trying to find instant chemistry.

"What type of player do they need?" Cooper said. "What helps them? Ultimately you have to start somewhere. This is where we started tonight."

McDavid was happy with his linemates, contrasting the 19-year-old Celebrini's youthful finesse with Wilson's experience and fearsome physicality.

"Obviously very different players … but great players in their own way," McDavid said. "Definitely a good blend of different things. I think we make a good line."

But Cooper reminded his team that his lineups evolved radically at last year's 4 Nations Face-Off, and he expects the same in Milan.

"If I think the pace is going to be anything like it was at 4 Nations, and I'm pretty darn sure it's going to be that and then some, then you’re going to need everybody going," he said.

Canada's first game comes Thursday against Czechia.

Skating in place of Yuma Kagiyama, who performed the short program on Saturday, Sato was last to perform in the free program.

The Japanese skater performed a classical rendition of The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky with a clean program throughout, scoring 194.86 points — a season’s best — but was six points short of taking first in the event and securing gold for Japan.

The U.S. Becomes repeat gold medalists in the team event, as they also beat Japan in Beijing 2022.

Final scores include USA for gold with 69 points, one point ahead of Japan with 68 points in silver and Italy for bronze with 60 points.

Canada finishes in fifth place with 54 behind Georgia in fourth place with 56 points.

American Ilia Malinin shouldered all the pressure of USA figure skating, needing a flawless performance to secure team gold for his nation ahead of Japan. He did not do his quad axel today, instead, turned it into a triple. And he had a big step out on an attempted quad lutz. Final score: 200.03.

Japan’s Shun Sato can win the gold for his nation with a higher score.

Coming off a career best performance in the short program on Saturday, Olympic rookie Stephen Gogolev skated to Piano Concerto No. 2 by S. Rachmaninov. While out of medal contention, Gogolev skated into second place with a well-composed performance, earning a season’s best score of 171.93.

America’s Illia Malinin and Japan’s Shun Sato will skate for gold.

Big moment for this young skater, carrying the hopes of his nation and a slim two-point lead over Georgia for the bronze medal position.

Rizzo gets off to a great start, nailing his opening quadruple toe loop, the only quad jump of his program. He’s an emotive skater, compelling to watch and able to draw in the crowd. They love him in the arena and he crumples to the ice with his face in his hands as the music ends. Smiles, tears, cheers… Huge emotion. Score: 179.62 That gives Italy the bronze in team figure skating. What a scene in the Italian kiss-and-cry box!

Egadze appeared to struggle through pieces of his free program, stepping out of or downgrading several jumps, lowering his technical score.

The Georgian was visibly disappointed at the end of his performance. He earned a score of 154.79 points, bringing Georgia to 56 points and third position.

Kaori Sakamoto wins the Olympic figure skating team women's free program

Three-time world champion Kaori Sakamoto scored 148.62 points to win the Olympic figure skating team women's free program, which set up a battle between Japan and the United States for the gold medal in the men's free program.

Japan and the U.S. Are tied in first place with 59 points, although Japan holds the tiebreaker.

Italy is sitting in third with 52 points. Georgia is in fourth with 50, followed by Canada with 47.

So it's all down to the men's free skate, coming up momentarily. The showdown for the gold medal will be between "Quad God" Ilia Malinin of Team USA and Shun Sato of Japan.

Canada's Stephen Gogolev had an excellent skate in the short and finished third.

Juliette Pelchat and Laurie Blouin failed to qualify for the women's snowboard big air final despite making solid jumps in the third round.

This marks the first time Canada has not reached the final in the event since it was introduced at PyeongChang in 2018.

Pelchat and Blouin aren't done yet, though. They'll both return for the snowboard women's slopestyle qualifier on Day 10.

Lindsey Vonn crash update with alpine skiing analyst Brian Stemmle

American skiing star Lindsey Vonn was airlifted following a crash 13 seconds into her downhill run. We're joined by alpine skiing analyst Brian Stemmle to take a look at what happened at the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre.

Ski racing is a race against the clock. Time is everything.

The women's Olympic downhill was clinched by 0.04 seconds. If you're behind by one second, that's a lot in a ski race.

Racers make little adjustments throughout their runs to make themselves — as aerodynamic as possible.

Today, it only took 12.5 seconds for Vonn to lose control. She fell in the top section of the Olimpia delle Tofane, Cortina d'Ampezzo’s downhill course.

"That's where your speed for the rest of the course gets determined," Kristian Ghedina, a former Italian racer who grew up in Cortina, told Reuters. "If you don’t take the right trajectory, it makes a huge difference because you end up going uphill."

The top features curves that are unforgiving — including an uphill traverse with a key right turn. That's where Vonn went down.

"The goal is to be as close to that gate as possible," said Norwegian skier Kajsa Vickhoff Lie. “But she was too close to it, so she got hooked into it."

Then things went really wrong.

Vonn got bucked off the final bump of the uphill section. Lie noted that particular bump was "more of a kicker" in this year's downhill, which is why Vonn suddenly popped into the air.

Canadian snowboarder Mark McMorris just posted to social media, telling his followers he's still expecting to be able to compete in men's slopestyle on Feb. 16.

McMorris took a hard fall during training on Wednesday and hurt his head. He was carried off in a stretcher.

In a short video, wearing a bright red tuque, McMorris said he's "been resting and recovering."

"It's looking good for me to get cleared to compete in slopestyle. Just staying the course, staying positive and keeping the belief alive."

McMorris won bronze medals in slopestyle in each of his three previous Olympics.

"The medical teams were amazing and you guys were amazing. Thank you for all the love and support. I'm well on my way to recovery," he said in the video.
