Megan Oldham should be a contender in the women’s freestyle skiing slopestyle final today. The 24-year-old from Parry Sound, Ont., was second in the World Cup standings in this event in 2025, and won bronze at the 2025 worlds.
Quebec’s Naomi Urness burst on the World Cup scene earlier this season with three straight medals in the big air discipline, including a gold. The 21-year-old finished 13th in all three slopestyle World Cup starts so far in her career, but won a silver at the Winter X Games in Aspen two weeks ago.
Oldham and Urness placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in qualifying to reach the 12-skier final.
It consists of three runs, with the last one going at 7:28 a.m. ET.
Canada isn’t taking part in the men’s alpine team combined race in Bormio, Italy. The first racer kicked out of the start gate at 4:30 a.m. ET.
This is the first time that the alpine team combined event has been featured on the Olympic stage.
Team combined starts with a downhill run, followed by a single slalom run later in the day. Part of the rules are that both races have to be held on the same day. A team is also made up of two racers, both of the same gender. One athlete races the speed discipline and the other the slalom.
The team with the lowest combined time in downhill and slalom will be awarded the gold medal.
The Stelvio in Bormio, where the team combined events are taking place, is noted as being one of the fastest downhill courses in the world.
The men's World Cup circuit typically visits the piste in December. It is expected to be lighter and less icy in February, which adds an element of the unknown for the athletes.
Good morning, I'm Verity Stevenson — a writer in Montreal. It's only Day 3 of the 2026 Milano-Cortina Olympics and much has happened already.
Yesterday began with American ski racer Lindsey Vonn's harrowing crash in the downhill where she broke her left leg. Vonn was airlifted after agonizing minutes on the side of the hill.
The rest of the day's competitions saw several Canadian athletes coming up short of their hopes and no new medals. Curling mixed doubles married couple, Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant, were eliminated from playoff contention; veteran Canadian speed skater Ted-Jan Bloemen placed 13th in the men's 5,000 metre final; and, though Canada had podium aspirations in figure skating's team event, it ended up falling one spot to a fifth-place finish.
The hardware tally remains: one bronze medal for Valérie Maltais's long-track speed skate Saturday 🥉.
Today is a new day and there's still lots of time for Olympic dreams to come true. Here's a bit of what's in store:
