Commentator and former Team Canada speed skater Anastasia Bucsis compares racing the 1,000-metre to "taking a bath of lava," explaining that the effort causes your legs to fill with lactic acid.

And now, Wennemars has to do it again.

"I'm not even trying to be cute with this. That's how difficult this distance is," Bucsis said.

On another note, Snoop Dogg is in the crowd.

Wennemars, the Dutchman, looking locked and loaded as he steps out of the dressing room and back into the oval to try to beat his previous time in the 1,000-metre speed skate.

Joep Wennemars has been given a re-race to see if he can beat his time. A tall task for someone who just gave their all. He'll be skating alone on this one.

American speed-skating superstar Jordan Stolz just set an Olympic record at 1:06.28 in his pairing against Dutch skater Jenning de Boo, who finished at 1:06.78, landing him in second.

Stolz is the world-record holder for the 1,000-metre, set in January 2024, at 1:05.37

There's one pair to go.

Dutch champion Joep Wennemars was heading for the top spot in the men's short-track speed skate but collided with China's Lian Ziwen, who was disqualified as a result.

The crossover caused the men's skates to touch and affected Wennemars's overall time of 1:07.58. He's now in second.

That's the second disqualification we've seen today at Milan's ice oval. Austria's Gabriel Odor is out after a near collision with Piotr Michalski of Poland. Michalski was also gunning for first before that last-lap exchange ruined his chances. He's in 23rd at 1:10.02.

U.S. Ski star Lindsey Vonn says she underwent a third surgery to repair her left leg which was injured in a gruesome crash at Sunday's women's downhill at Cortina d'Ampezzo.

"I’m making progress and while it is slow, I know I’ll be OK," Vonn wrote in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

The 41-year-old has a complex tibia fracture and maintains the fall had nothing to do with the torn ACL, meniscus and bone bruise she was skiing on after another crash just nine days before the Olympic race.

"Success today has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago," she wrote.

Italians Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer win gold in luge women's doubles. They kept their top spot position in the second run, coming in with a speedy 53.280 for a total time of 1:46.284.

The German team comes in second, a few fractions of a second longer than Run 1 with 53.350 for a total of 1:46.404. Not bad for bombing down a swirly ice track about 1.7 kilometres long.

Third are Selina Egle and Lara Michaela Kipp of Austria — in at 53.350 for a total of 1:46.543.

Canadians Beattie Podulsky and Kailee Allan make it to the top 10 (in 10th) at 53.747 for a total of 1:49.482. The pair were the fifth fastest in Run 2.

It’s Game One of the men’s Olympic hockey tournament and we already have an upset. Montreal Canadiens' forward Juraj Slafkovský scored two goals and an assist en route to a 4-1 win for Slovakia over Finland in Group B action.

Slafkovský was a star at the 2022 Olympic tournament, too, albeit without NHLers playing. Then only 17 years old, he had seven points in seven games. The performance boosted his draft stock and the Canadiens selected him first overall in the NHL Draft later that year.

The Finns are without their captain and best player, Aleksander Barkov. But it’s still a surprise to see a star-studded Finland team toppled by Slovakia. Most expected Finland and Sweden to dominate Group B.

Figure skating ice dance gets underway at 13:30 p.m. ET, featuring Canadian medal hopefuls Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier.

The longtime partners are in the fight of their lives to hang on to a podium position as they enter the free dance, sitting in third place after the rhythm dance, less than a point ahead of fourth place rivals Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson, of Great Britain.

Gilles and Poirier are skating a revived program they first used in competition a few years ago to a poignant rendition of the Don McLean song Vincent (Starry Starry Night).

Three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates, of the U.S., are in second — a formidable 3.5 points ahead of Gilles and Poirier.

The new French team of Olympic champion Guillaume Cizeron and Laurence Fournier Beaudry — a Canadian now representing France — sits in first place with a slim .36 lead.

Canada's ice dance contingent is rounded out by the teams of Marjorie LaJoie and Zachary Lagha, who enter the finals in ninth position, and 15th place Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain Le Gac.

The teams perform in reverse order, meaning Gilles and Poirier will skate 18th, or third to last.

There must be something in the water at this speed-skating oval because the Italians are on a tear.

Despite a very fast start, Dubreuil came in just behind Italian Daniele di Stefano in his pairing. Their times were close, with Dubreuil coming in at 1:08.21 and di Stefano at 1:08.17.

The Canadian silver medallist (Beijing 2022) breezed past di Stefano at the start, despite starting on the inside of the oval and therefore slightly behind. Then di Stefano gained steam just in time for that finish.

Italian speed skaters are having a strong showing on home turf at the Milano-Cortina Games, winning gold after upsets in the mixed-team relay Tuesday and women's 3,000-metre long-track skate on Saturday.
