Captivating performance from youngsters Majorie Lajoie, 25, and Zachary Lagha, 26, although they appeared quite unhappy with their marks.
After skating to the piano and violin music from The White Crow their total score is 199.8, initially putting them in second place with eight teams remaining, including Canada’s Gilles and Poirier.
LaJoie and Lagha are guaranteed to finish better than their 13th in Beijing 2022.
Fortunately today, when my camera person Jared Thomas saw her in the stands, I had one for her.
In return, she gave a pin she made which resembles the coveted fleece from the show Heated Rivalry.
I think I got the better trade.
In curling, Canada is currently tied 4-4 with Germany in the eighth end in the opening game for the men's tournament.
First of the three Canadian teams to hit the ice is married couple Marie-Jade Lauriault and Romain le Gac, who really laid it down.
Of course figure skating is subjective but I really love this pair’s routine — unique lifts and spins, perfect twizzle sequence, a tonne of personality displayed through choreography.
Also stand-out costuming, especially Lauriault’s azure blue skating dress with the embellished gold snake that winds from the front, around her neck and to the back, fitting of the Cleopatra music.
Co-coach Scott Moir looks pleased in the kiss-and-cry booth. Final score of 187.18 moves them into first place for the time being with 14 pairs still to come.
The men's doubles luge has wrapped. The Italian team here, too, takes gold — just as in the women's doubles final.
Emanuel Rieder and teammate Simon Kainzwaldner finished with a total time of 1:45.086.
Winning silver are Austria's Thomas Steu and Wolfgang Kindl at 1:45.154. Germany gets bronze with 1:45.176 from seasoned teammates Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt, who share a first name and (fun fact) were born only two weeks apart in June 1987.
Canadians Cole Zajanski and Devin Wardrope kept their top 10 spot in that second run, with a total time of 1:45.906. It's a decent position for an Olympic debut and a pair who only started competing on the world stage together a few years ago.
No one is going to break Tina's stride.
The official mascot of the Games busted some absolutely feral moves alongside a four-piece band between speed skaters in Milan's makeshift oval on Wednesday.
The oval has been a hot bed of fun in other races, from a DJ mixing John Denver club covers and an Italian hype man getting the crowd to sing along between heats.
Go Tina!
While Canadian Laurent Dubreuil had a nice spot in the top three for a little while there — after putting down a nice race against Italian Daniele di Stefano — he ultimately finished eighth with 1:08.21.
Teammate David La Rue gets the 18th spot at 1:09.310 and fellow Canadian Anders Johnson is in 22nd with 1:09.54.
American Jordan Stolz earns his 1st Olympic gold medal with an Olympic record time
Jordan Stolz of the United States set a new 1,000-metre Olympic record time of 1:06.28, to claim his first career gold medal at the Milano-Cortina Winter Games.
Jordan Stolz of the U.S. Takes gold with his Olympic record-setting time of 1:06.28. Jenning de Boo of the Netherlands gets silver, after coming in right behind Stolz in that 14th pairing.
Zhongyan Ning of China takes bronze with 1:07.39.
Wennemars had to dig deep for that skate, but didn't beat his time — finishing the re-race at 1:08.46.
On the second lap, he was already behind the pace he'd set in his first race when it was looking like he could get the gold.
The crowd was rapturous as Wennemars flew around the oval, but the 23-year-old Dutch skater bowed his head in disappointment afterward. It may be Wennemars's first Olympics, but he is basically Dutch speed skating royalty. His father Egbert 'Erben' Wennemars won gold in the 1,000-metre in 2006 at the Turin Games.
Commentator and former Team Canada speed skater Anastasia Bucsis compares racing the 1,000-metre to "taking a bath of lava," explaining that the effort causes your legs to fill with lactic acid.
And now, Wennemars has to do it again.
"I'm not even trying to be cute with this. That's how difficult this distance is," Bucsis said.
On another note, Snoop Dogg is in the crowd.
