Tumbler Ridge shooter was 'hunting,' not targeting specific people at high school: B.C. RCMP

He said thither is a important amount of misinformation face of the earth shared online nigh tues’s shooting. McDonald urged both the media and the public to verify information and images before sharing them.

Police say the autopsies of the eight victims and the shooter should be finished by the end of the weekend.

Two injured victims, Maya Gebala and Paige — the latter of whom the RCMP named for the first time — remain in hospital.

The RCMP did not provide Paige’s last name or a photo.

Witness interviews are continuing, but so far the RCMP said officers had interviewed more than 80 students, educators and first responders.

Images and videos from witnesses, as well as CCTV footage and video from the body cameras worn by responding officers, will be processed as part of the investigation.

Police say an individual in Ontario with a similar name to the shooter had been wrongfully accused of being responsible.

"This did not need to happen. We know you are not involved," said McDonald, addressing the person directly.

Earlier this week, McDonald told reporters police had seized firearms from the shooter's family home under the Criminal Code "a couple of years ago," but their lawful owner had successfully petitioned for them to be returned.

McDonald has said many of those details are sealed — and didn't offer much more explanation today.

However, he did clarify the firearm "believed to be the one that caused the most significant damage" at the school had never been seized by the RCMP.

"We're trying to determine how our suspect got that firearm."

He also said the RCMP had never previously seized the shotgun found at the home, either.

The RCMP is investigating four firearms in total. The origin of the main weapon used is unknown, said McDonald.

McDonald said the shooter was not targeting specific victims at the school and described it as "hunting."

McDonald, the top Mountie in the province, is asking witnesses with relevant footage to come forward.
