In ski jumping, Canada's Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes takes to the air again in the men's large-hill event.
Boyd-Clowes didn't advance to the final in the men's normal hill ski jump on Monday. He placed 45th in the first round, falling short of the top 30 needed to advance.
Marie-Philip Poulin returns from injury and resumes pre-game routine with wife Laura Stacey
Team Canada women's team captain Marie-Philip Poulin and wife Laura Stacey collected pucks after their pre-game warmup, ahead of their Olympic quarterfinal game against Germany.
We heard before the game from Canadian head coach Troy Ryan that he’d be managing captain Marie-Philip Poulin’s minutes in her return from injury.
While playing 4:30 through the first period over seven shifts, she’s been the typical Poulin — a solid two-way forward who is one of the best backcheckers in the game.
Another part of her game that Canada missed while she was out is her prowess at the faceoff dot. She’s won all five draws she took so far.
The crowd around the speed-skating oval's long-track went wild as Dutch skater Joep Wennemars just took the ice.
Earlier this year, Wennemars was headed for gold in his 1,000-metre race until Chinese skater Lian Ziwen collided with him, setting him off course.
Ziwen was disqualified and Wennemars, in his Olympic debut at the Milano-Cortina Games, was granted a re-race but failed to rival his time from the first race and make podium.
Wennemars wasn't quite able to recreate the magic today again in the 500 metres with a time of 34.89, landing him off the podium in sixth for now.
The Canadian 28-year-old, who is performing well at his first Olympics, is in third with 34.81.
There are seven pairs left to go, including American superstar Jordan Stolz, so things could change quickly.
Canada's Jocelyne Larocque on chasing your dreams, and why representation matters
Team Canada defender, who is a member of the Red River Métis, is the most decorated Indigenous Olympian in Canadian history, with three Olympic medals. She's competing at her fourth Games.
Canadian defender Jocelyne Larocque is the most decorated Indigenous athlete in Canadian history across any Olympics — winter or summer.
"To think back at that kid, she'd be so excited and proud of me," said Larocque, recalling her Olympic debut at the 1998 Winter Games in Nagano, Japan.
Now 37, the Métis athlete from Ste. Anne, Man., is at her fourth Olympic Games. Being an Indigenous role model on the world stage brings an immense sense of pride for Larocque.
"I celebrate my culture all the time, and I think it's important for young people, Indigenous [or] not Indigenous, to be able to see it," she said.
"I think visibility creates dreams and I hope that what I can show is when you love something so much, to dream big and to chase those dreams, and that there's always going to be setbacks and there's always going to be adversity."
Defender Claire Thompson puts Canada ahead 2-0 with a shot from the blue line that just squeaked through the five-hole on German goaltender Sandra Abstreiter.
Although leading at the end of the first period, I’m not sure Canadian coach Troy Ryan is super pleased with his team’s first period.
Lots to clean up for the second on passing, zone entries, etc.
More excitement and possible medals for Canada on the speed-skating tracks today.
Laurent Dubreuil from Lévis, Que., has an eye on the podium in the men's 500 metres (11 a.m. ET).
On the short track, world champion William Dandjinou, from Montreal, and Beijing 2022 silver medallist Steven Dubois, from Terrebonne, Que., race in the men's 1,500 metres.
Qualifying starts at 2:15 p.m. ET.
Dubreuil won the 500-metre world title in 2021 and, after placing fourth at the 2022 Olympics, took silvers at the world championships in 2023 and '24. He just missed another medal at last year's worlds, finishing fourth, but remained among the best on the World Cup tour, finishing second in the standings to U.S. Superstar Jordan Stolz.
The 33-year-old has finished no better than sixth in any of his 500-metre races. But a respectable eighth-place showing in the 1,000-metre (his weaker event) on Wednesday gives some hope that Dubreuil can make one more run at the podium in what is likely the final Olympic race of his career.
Dubreuil, who will be skating in the 10th pair, is joined by Olympic newcomers Cedrick Brunet and Anders Johnson on Team Canada today. Johnsons, 29, skates in the fifth pair and Brunet in the seventh.
PWHL fans will see a couple of familiar faces on the German women’s hockey team.
Their goaltender, Sandra Abstreiter, is the backup for the Montreal Victoire. She’s also played for the Ottawa Charge.
Defender Nina Jobst-Smith is from Vancouver and plays for the Goldeneyes.
Forward Laura Kluge plays for the Boston Fleet, and last season was with the Toronto Sceptres.
And of course, there’s a Canadian connection behind the bench.
Head coach Jeff MacLeod is from Halifax and played USports hockey against Troy Ryan. MacLeod played for Acadia University and Ryan was with the University of New Brunswick back in the ‘90s.
A tough first power play in this game for Canada.
German forward Laura Kluge was sprung for a breakaway, but Canada’s captain Marie-Philip Poulin disrupted it with a backcheck.
That happened after Poulin missed the last couple of games with a knee injury. I’d say she looks pretty good.
The winning streak by the Canadian men's curling team is over after today’s loss against Switzerland.
There was little drama compared to vice Marc Kennedy's heated exchange with Sweden's Oskar Erikson yesterday.
Switzerland was firmly in control throughout this match, and Canada was unable to put together a high scoring end to get back into contention.
Tomorrow, Team Jacobs will face China (0-3).
Under two minutes into women’s hockey playoff action, Canada has opened the scoring over Germany.
The goal by assistant captain Brianne Jenner came off a nice saucer pass from Emma Maltais.
Jenner is known for showing up big at these tournaments.
She was the MVP in 2022. She’s also having her best season yet in the PWHL with the Ottawa Charge.
