Fact check: Are political statements banned at the Olympics?
Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin’s goal makes it 5-1 over Germany in the third period.
It also puts her one step closer to rewriting the record books.
She’s now tied with retired Canadian forward Hayley Wickenheiser for the most Olympic goals all-time (18) in women’s hockey.
Hello. This is Kris Reyes in Milan.
I’ve been meeting so many Canadian fans, including at a bar in the Navigli district that has become the unofficial Canada House in Milan.
A Canadian flag is hanging on the wall, and music from Canadian artists including Bryan Adams, the Weeknd and Avril Lavigne are blasting through the speakers.
Team Canada hockey games are on the TV sitting on stage. It’s not the massive screens of sports bars, but it’s good enough for the fans here who are just happy to have found a home away from home.
Word about the bar spread fast and quick on various social media channels.
The Canadians we’ve spoken to are thrilled to have a home away from home as they cheer on the athletes.
Canada gives up a shorthanded breakaway on the power play, allowing Franziska Feldmeier to put Germany on the board, making it 4-1.
That’s Germany’s first Olympic goal against Canada in women's hockey.
It all started with an intercepted pass from Renata Fast to Daryl Watts — definitely something for Canada to clean up as this tournament goes on.
Unfortunately for Germany, the PWHL’s jailbreak rule doesn’t exist in international play. (That rule frees a player from the penalty box when their team scores shorthanded.
Marc Kennedy offers some regret for fiery exchange, apologizes to Canadian curling fans
Canadian vice Marc Kennedy says he could have handled his testy exchange with Sweden's Oskar Eriksson better and wants to continue being a role model for young Canadian curlers.
Marc jack kennedy says he's had some clip to cool down away after things got heated between Canada and Sweden during their men's curling match yesterday over cheating accusations, and admits it wasn't a good look.
"We had a good chat last night. I thanked my team for having my back. It … wasn't great," he said.
"We're looking forward to moving on from it. To be completely honest with you, I probably could've handled myself better in the moment."
The testy exchange happened between Kennedy and Sweden's Oskar Eriksson after Eriksson said he thought some Canadian players were failing to release the rock on time.
Unhappy about the accusation, Kennedy told the Swede to "f–k off."
When Eriksson said he'd pull up video evidence later, Kennedy said, "I don't give a shit."
Kennedy ended up getting a verbal warning from World Curling for the F-bombs.
While he apologized to "the young curlers around the country" he feels he's a role model for, Kennedy stopped short of saying sorry to the Swedes.
"I felt like I was defending and standing up for my teammates and myself in a moment where it was kind of tough on us all game, what Sweden was doing to us," Kennedy said.
"So anyways, looking forward to moving on."
Blayre Turnbull, the pride of Stellarton, N.S., has made it 4-0 over Germany just 38 seconds into the third period.
It’s her first goal of the tournament.
Marie-Philip Poulin returns from injury and resumes pre-game routine with wife Laura Stacey
Team Canada women's team captain Marie-Philip Poulin and wife Laura Stacey collected pucks after their pre-game warmup, ahead of their Olympic quarterfinal game against Germany.
All is right in the world.
Captain Marie-Philip Poulin is back where she belongs: on the ice, leading the Canadian women's hockey team in their quarterfinal against Germany.
Women's hockey ❤️
Now for the Valentine's Day reunion we have all been waiting for: Poulin and Laura Stacey collecting Canada's warmup pucks together again. (We won't talk about those other two times 👀.)
Canada currently has a decisive lead against Germany, up 3-0 at the end of the second period.
This is the first time these two teams have ever played each other at the Olympics.
The gold medallist in men's giant slalom 🥇
While Canada's gold-medal drought continues, Brazil got one this morning.
It's actually the country's first medal, and all of South America for that matter, at any Winter Games.
And it was Lucas Braathen Pinheiro who did it.
The Norwegian-born 25-year-old has been representing Brazil on the World Cup circuit since coming out of retirement — yes, that's right — last year.
He raced for the Nordic country when he made his World Cup debut. Then, he retired early in October 2023, only to return with different colours on his speed suit — green and yellow for his mother's native country: Brazil — in a race to put it on the alpine skiing map.
He did that today, sending the likes of Switzerland's heavyweights, Marco Odermatt and Loic Meillard, to second and third, respectively, in the men's giant slalom in Bormio.
Oh, did we mention Braathen Pinheiro is also a model and designer?
Olympic villages all out of condoms — 10,000 of them
What happens in the Olympic village, stays in the Olympic village 😈 — or at least that's the idea behind why organizers offer free condoms.
But they're all out, and they have been since Day 3 of the Games, according to reports.
Now, there are around 2,800 athletes competing at the Milano-Cortina Games and they ran out of 10,000 condoms. You do the math.
Long-track speed skating: Laurent Dubreuil is here and he means business!
Woah, that was a close race 😮💨. Blink and you would have missed it.
Canada's Laurent Dubreuil set an Olympic record of a blazing 34.26 seconds in the men's 500-metre long-track skate in Milan — only to have it broken a few moments later by 0.49 seconds, courtesy of American Jordan Stolz.
Dubreuil, the oldest man in the field at 33, took home the bronze medal.
Quick hits:
The medal heats for women's skeleton are underway, with Hallie Clarke hoping to become the first Canadian medallist in skeleton since Vancouver 2010.
Clarke, from Brighton, Ont., became the youngest female world champion in skeleton in 2024 at just 19. In January 2025, she achieved a unique double win by capturing the junior world championship, making her the first athlete to hold both titles simultaneously.
Her major competition today comes from Great Britain's Tabby Stoecker, Belgium's Kim Meylemans and Kimberley Bos from the Netherlands.
Sarah Fillier's power-play goal has put Canada up 3-0 over Germany in the women’s hockey quarterfinal.
It came shortly before the end of the second period.
The puck looked to bounce in off German goaltender Sandra Abstreiter’s pad.
Defender Renata Fast and forward Daryl Watts are credited with assists.
Ahead of these Games, Team Canada has won 79 Olympic medals in the sport: 42 in long track and 37 in short track since it was officially added to the Olympic program in 1992.
Correction: A previous version of this post said speed skating was added to the Olympic program in 1992. In fact, it was short-track speed skating that made it to the Winter Games program that year.
Laurent Dubreuil laid down the hammer in his pairing against American Cooper McLeod with a time of 34.26 that initially set an Olympic record.
After a false start, Dubreuil exploded out of the blocks, setting a top-spot pace and keeping it to the finish.
Soon after, that record was beaten by American Jordan Stolz at 33.77. Stolz raced against Jenning de Boo of the Netherlands, who also beat Dubreuil's time, with 33.88.
Dubreuil was able to keep his podium position after the last pairing between Japan's Wataru Morishige and Norway's Bjorn Magnussen. In 2022, Morishige inched Dubreuil off the podium by four one-hundreds of a second — but Dubreuil didn't let that happen again. Morishige finishes this one in 10th spot.
