Fact check: Are political statements banned at the Olympics?

Having covered several Olympics, I can verify one of the biggest questions is: Are there free condoms in the athletes' villages?

As mentioned earlier, at these Milano-Cortina Games, it appears the condoms have also become so highly coveted that there's a shortage. Reports suggest the supplies ran out after just three days.

The great condom shortage of 2026 has become such a hot topic that journalists asked the International Olympic Committee at this morning's regular news briefing if the prophylactics will be restocked in time to avert a Valentine's Day crisis.

IOC spokesperson Mark Adams didn't give an answer but pointed out the math — 10,000 condoms were available for 2,800 athletes, indicating "Valentine's Day is in full swing in the village."

Alpine skier Mialitiana Clerc of Madagascar, ostensibly at the briefing to talk about her Olympic experiences as recipient of an IOC scholarship, also ended up fielding questions about the popularity of the free condoms.

Competing in her second Olympics, Clerc said "I am not so shocked because I know that at the Winter Olympic Games there are a lot of people using condoms because I saw it in Beijing already."

She also said some athletes take the free condoms and give them as gifts to friends.

Spanish figure skater Olivia Smart recently posted on TikTok that she found some of the coveted condoms.

Will Dandjinou, Steven Dubois and Felix Roussel are up momentarily in the men's 1,500-metre short-track.

Dandjinou anchored Canada to a silver in the mixed relay on Tuesday before finishing a disappointing fourth in the men's 1,000 metres on Thursday, ending his bid for five medals in five events.

The back-to-back overall champion in the World Tour has a great opportunity to rebound in the 1,500 metres, where he's favoured for gold after capturing the world title last year and winning seven of the 10 competitions on the tour over the past two seasons.

Dubois is also looking to bounce back after crashing out in qualifying for the 1,000 metres as the reigning world champion. A silver in the 1,500 metres was part of his three-medal haul at Beijing 2022.

Roussel, who skated with Dandjinou in the mixed relay final, picked up a silver in the 1,500 metres at the final World Tour stop of the season in November in the Netherlands.

Racing begins with the quarterfinals at 2:15 p.m. ET. The semis are at 3:49 p.m. ET and the final at 4:42 p.m. ET.

Saturday's short-track slate also features the first round of qualifying for the women's 1,000 metres at 3:01 p.m. ET and the women's relay semifinals at 4:05 p.m. ET. Canada's Courtney Sarault is involved in both after earning a silver in the mixed relay and a solo bronze in the 500 metres on Thursday.

Canada's Megan Oldham just landed an effortless-looking switch double cork 900 in her first run — earning her a high score of 91.25 — in the big-air qualifications Run 1.

It looked as if she didn't even leave the ground after that one.

The 24-year-old from Parry Sound, Ont., placed fourth in the 2022 Beijing finals and is looking to get on that podium this time around.

Mont-Tremblant, Que.’s Naomi Urness, Elena Gaskell of Vernon, B.C., and Skye Clarke of Vancouver are all still to go.

It's the toughest test of the round robin for Canadian skip Rachel Homan, as the world's No. 1 takes on the world's No. 2: Swiss skip Silvana Tirinzoni.

This is one of the best rivalries in curling today. Tirinzoni won four consecutive world championships from 2019 to 2023. Homan stopped the streak in 2024 with a 7-5 victory in Sydney, N.S., then defended the title in 2025 with a 7-3 win in Uijeongbu, South Korea.

Greats of '88: Eddie the Eagle

The British ski jumper made the Olympics after starting the sport 20 months earlier, he knew he wouldn't win a medal but his goal was simply to represent his country.

Men's large-hill ski jumping is underway with the finals this afternoon.

And if you haven't found an Olympic crush this Valentine’s Day, here's one man who captured hearts on this day in Calgary 38 years ago: a certain Michael David Edwards, better known as Eddie the Eagle, the novice athlete who became Great Britain's first-ever qualifier for Olympic ski jumping.

He finished last in both the normal-hill and large-hill events at Calgary 1988 — but most people cared less about the result and more about Edwards's determination and his fairytale journey to the Winter Games.

Today, Canada's Mackenzie Boyd-Clowes has not advanced to the final, ending 46th.

Marie-Philip Poulin joins Hayley Wickenheiser as the women's all-time Olympic goal leader

Marie-Philip Poulin of Beauceville, Que., scored her 18th goal in Canada's 5-1 quarterfinal win over Germany, tying Hayley Wickenheiser as the women's all-time Olympic goal scoring leader.

Canada's captain says she's happy to be back on the ice, but wants to see her team start better.

"We have to be better," she said. "We want to be better. I think from when puck drops happen, we've got to show what team Canada is all about, and we have to find a way to be more physical and play in-your-face hockey."

Canada will face either Finland or Switzerland on Monday.

Canada has booked its spot in the semifinals with today’s 5-1 win over Germany.

The team will play the winner of this afternoon’s game between Finland and Switzerland.

Canada’s semifinal game is set for Monday beginning at 3:10 p.m. ET.

Sweden and the United States will play in the other semifinal on Monday starting at 10:40 a.m. ET.

Canada will surely be concerned by some of its puck management in the game against Germany. The matchups will only get more difficult from here.

Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin’s goal makes it 5-1 over Germany in the third period.

It also puts her one step closer to rewriting the record books.

She’s now tied with retired Canadian forward Hayley Wickenheiser for the most Olympic goals all-time (18) in women’s hockey.

Hello. This is Kris Reyes in Milan.

I’ve been meeting so many Canadian fans, including at a bar in the Navigli district that has become the unofficial Canada House in Milan.

A Canadian flag is hanging on the wall, and music from Canadian artists including Bryan Adams, the Weeknd and Avril Lavigne are blasting through the speakers.

Team Canada hockey games are on the TV sitting on stage. It’s not the massive screens of sports bars, but it’s good enough for the fans here who are just happy to have found a home away from home.

Word about the bar spread fast and quick on various social media channels.

The Canadians we’ve spoken to are thrilled to have a home away from home as they cheer on the athletes.

Canada gives up a shorthanded breakaway on the power play, allowing Franziska Feldmeier to put Germany on the board, making it 4-1.

That’s Germany’s first Olympic goal against Canada in women's hockey.

It all started with an intercepted pass from Renata Fast to Daryl Watts — definitely something for Canada to clean up as this tournament goes on.

Unfortunately for Germany, the PWHL’s jailbreak rule doesn’t exist in international play. (That rule frees a player from the penalty box when their team scores shorthanded.
