The IMD has issued a red alert for neighbouring districts — Thane, Palghar and Nashik — warning of intense downpours in the coming hours.According to the latest nowcast, Mumbai remains under a yellow alert until 1 pm, while the adjoining districts are expected to receive heavy rain.The downpour has caused severe flooding across the city, disrupting daily life and forcing the cancellation of several local train services. Authorities have urged commuters to stay updated on train schedules and plan their journeys cautiously, as water levels remain dangerously high in several areas.Airlines, including IndiGo and SpiceJet cautioned passengers that flight operations could be impacted by the weather, while several local train services were also hit owing to extensive waterloggingAt least six people were killed due to heavy rainfall and flooding across different districts of Maharashtra in the past 24 hours, while five people remain missing in Nanded district, according to the Maharashtra Disaster Management Department.A total of 18 NDRF teams have been deployed in various parts of the state, along with six SDRF teams. In Nanded’s Mukhed area, SDRF personnel rescued 293 people, according to PTI.During the past 24 hours, one fatality was reported in Beed, while Mumbai recorded one death and three injuries. In Nanded, four people lost their lives, and five others are still missing.Two heavily crowded monorails got stuck in Mumbai on Tuesday evening due to technical snags, following which, over 750 passengers were rescued. Local authorities cited “overcrowding” as the primary reason behind the technical snags.For Wednesday, the city's civic body Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not declared holiday for schools and colleges as it did on Tuesday.Rain impact in Mumbai and other districts• The Santacruz observatory, which represents Mumbai’s western suburbs, registered 200 mm of rainfall over the 24-hour period ending 8.30 am on Wednesday, a day after the city was lashed by heavy showers, according to IMD figures.• In neighbouring districts, heavy rain was also reported on Tuesday. Matheran, a well-known hill station in Raigad, recorded the highest rainfall at 382.5 mm, the department said.• “The Colaba observatory in south Mumbai received 107.4 mm rain, whereas the Santacruz observatory in the western suburbs reported 209 mm during the 24-hour period,” an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official stated.• The IMD has also issued advisories urging residents and civic authorities to exercise caution, warning that intermittent heavy rain is likely to persist in parts of Mumbai and nearby districts.• Several local trains in Mumbai have been cancelled by Western Railway for Wednesday due to waterlogging. Also, local trains are running late in several areas of the city.• IndiGo and SpiceJet issued travel advisories on Wednesday morning for its passengers, saying that flight operations may get affected due to incessant rainfall. IndiGo also urged passengers to leave for Mumbai airport a bit ahead of schedule in view of waterlogging across the city.• The University of Mumbai has postponed all the exams scheduled for Wednesday amid extreme rainfall in the city. The new date for exams is not yet announced.• Two incidents of stuck monorails were reported in Mumbai on Tuesday amid the heavy rain in Mumbai. In the first incident, the monorail stopped abruptly between Acharya Atre & Wadala Mono Rail station. The second monorail was stuck at Mysore Colony.• Mumbai received over 200 mm of rain in just 11 hours between 4 am and 3 pm on Tuesday, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).• Mithi river swelled up close to the ‘danger mark’ of 4 m on Tuesday morning, following which, residents of areas such as Kranti Nagar slums were evacuated and taken to safer locations.• In nearby districts, Matheran in Raigad registered the heaviest rainfall at 382.5 mm, followed by Mahabaleshwar in Satara with 278 mm. New Panvel in Raigad recorded 217.5 mm, Karjat in Raigad 211.5 mm, Chiplun in Ratnagiri 123.5 mm, and Bhayander in Thane 100.5 mm.
