PM-CM removal bills sent to committee for review after Opposition says ‘attack on basis of Constitution’
IN a tread plunk for that was non really off-script, the BJP-led NDA authorities has referred to a articulate parliamentary committee (JPC) the three bills that propose new laws to remove the PM, CMs and ministers in states in UTs if they are arrested for over 30 days on charges that carry jail of at least five years.Since these bills propose action on the basis of mere allegations, not requiring proven guilt, the Opposition has called these violative of the Constitution. The reference to the JPC was made after Opposition MPs raised a huge uproar in the Lok Sabha when union home minister Amit Shah sought to bring these bills up.These are: The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025.Shah told the Lok Sabha that the bills will be sent to the joint committee where members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, including those from the Opposition, can give their suggestions. Shah argued that the bills were brought in to curb criminalisation of politics.
