Canada's medal count grew to 20 on the last full day of Olympic competition thanks to podium finishes in men's and women's curling and a silver in the women's mass start.
Medals all around for Canada's curlers 🥌: Rachel Homan got her Olympic redemption today, leading the women's team to a hard-fought 10-7 win over the U.S for the bronze medal. An Olympic medal has eluded Homan at her last two Olympic Games, but not this time.
Canada's men's team followed that up a gold medal win against Great Britain after a tightly contested game. It's the first Olympic gold for skip Brad Jacobs since Sochi 2014.
Blondin goes out on a high ⛸️: It was 2022 all over again for Ottawa speed skater Ivanie Blondin, who defended her silver in the women's mass start in potentially her last Olympic race. Last week, she also successfully defended her Olympic gold in the women's long-track team pursuit alongside longtime teammates Isabelle Weidemann and Valérie Maltais.
Klæbo's superhuman victory ⛷️: Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo shattered a nearly 50-year-old record when he completed an Olympic gold sweep with his sixth win in these Games in the men's cross-country 50-kilometre mass start. Klæbo's career total of 11 Olympic golds is now second only to U.S. Swimming great Michael Phelps, who has 23.
Canada to play for men’s hockey gold after heart-stopping win over Finland
The Canadian men’s Olympic hockey team will play for gold after a heart-stopping 3-2 comeback win against Finland in a semifinal matchup that had fans sweating.
The men's gold-medal hockey game is tomorrow's headliner.
In the five previous times NHLers have gone to the Olympics, Canada and the U.S. Have faced off in the final just twice, in 2002 and 2010. Canada won both times.
Out of all Olympic men’s hockey tournaments, Canada has won nine gold medals. The U.S. Has won two.
One of those American gold medals came in Lake Placid in 1980's "Miracle on Ice," when an underdog U.S. Team defeated the powerhouse Soviet Union. Tomorrow is the 46th anniversary of that win.
Current U.S. Forward Brock Nelson’s uncle, Dave Christian, was part of the Miracle on Ice team. He’s in Italy to watch his nephew play.
"Those guys kind of paved the way and set up another generation to strive to be them," Nelson said.
"It's a great way to end this chapter for me," said Maltais, who has said this will be her final Olympics (her fifth) as an athlete.
Both speed skaters won gold at these games: Maltais in women's team pursuit and Dubois in the 500-metre short track.
"It kind of really finishes everything up in a nice way," said Dubois, whose gold was his first in an individual event.
Maltais also won bronze in the 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres, while Dubois won silver in mixed relay.
Both gave advice to aspiring Olympians.
Be bold, said Maltais: "Listen to your own voice, gut, if you feel there's something in you that you think you can achieve."
From Dubois: "Bet on yourself and give yourself a chance to win."
Two Québécois speed skating champions will carry the Canadian flag at tomorrow's closing ceremony at the Arena di Verona: Triple-medallist Valérie Maltais and short-track champion Steven Dubois.
"Valérie Maltais and Steven Dubois represent the heart, grit, and unity of Team Canada," read the announcement from the team.
Maltais, 35, collected three medals at the Games: the team pursuit gold medal and a bronze in both the 1,500-metre and 3,000-metre events. Maltais, from La Baie, Que., was over the moon after her third medal on Friday.
Dubois, 28, won silver in the mixed relay and gold in the men’s 500-metre short track final. He beat fellow Canadian William Dandjinou and three Dutch skaters in the latter, including brothers Melle and Jens van ’t Wout. “It means so much, honestly,” the Terrebonne, Que.,-born athlete said after his race.
Canada's Blondin adds mass start silver medal to her bronze at Milano Cortina 2026
After claiming a silver medal four years ago in Beijing, Ottawa's Ivanie Blondin captured another mass start speed skating Olympic silver medal, this time at Milano Cortina 2026.
Ahead of the women's mass start final, Ivanie Blondin says she told Marijke Groenewoud — the Dutch skater who ended up winning gold ahead of her silver — that it would be their "last dance."
It was Blondin's last race at what she has said would be her last Olympics.
Looking back at her career, Blondin said she's been described as feisty, then laughed, saying "people have probably put up with far too much." That trait has also been a motivator, she said.
"It's why I'm still here, still fighting for medals — and I'm proud of that," she said, adding she was also proud to hear she is inspiring a younger generation of skaters.
"I had the older generation that inspired my career and made me fight tooth and nail to get there. So if it inspires them to make it to the top, then let's go," she said.
Rachel Homan says she 'couldn't be prouder' of her rink after winning Olympic curling bronze
Rachel Homan and her Ottawa-based rink spoke with Bryan Mudryk after curling to an Olympic bronze medal at Milano Cortina 2026.
In her victory interview after winning the women's curling bronze, Rachel Homan looked satisfied and perhaps a little relieved.
"[We] struggled early, but it didn't matter," she said. "We stuck together, and I couldn’t be more proud of our fight. And to get a bronze medal and bring that home for Canada, there's just no better feeling."
Second Emma Miskew, who was on the Homan team that was eliminated early at the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics, said those who counted the Canadian women out after a slow start in Milano Cortina were too quick to judge.
"This one feels so sweet," said Miskew. "The fact that we were even in the semi — we had to win five sudden-death games in a row just to get there."
She added: "We said in the changeroom after we started … 'We’re going to keep playing until they tell us to leave.' And then we got to come home with a medal."
Finland has won Olympic men’s hockey bronze with a 6-1 victory over Slovakia.
The game felt a lot closer at the beginning of the third period, when Finland led by only 2-1, but a power play goal from Roope Hintz opened the floodgates for the team.
Finland now has five medals in Games featuring NHL players: silver (2006) and four bronze (1998, 2010, 2014 and 2026).
There was ultimately no change at the top of the standings after the final run of the two-women bobsleigh, with Germany's Laura Nolte and Deborah Levi repeating as Olympic champions ahead of compatriots Lisa Buckwitz and Neele Schuten.
Kaillie Armbruster Humphries and Jasmine Jones of the U.S. Held on for the bronze by just 0.15 seconds from Germany's Kim Kalicki and Talea Prepens.
Canada's teams finished around three seconds back, with top-placed Canadians Bianca Ribi and Skylar Sieben ending up in joint 11th place. Cynthia Appiah and Dawn Richardson Wilson placed 13th, while Melissa Lotholz and Kelsey Mitchell were 14th.
It marks Canada's worst finish in two-woman bobsleigh since the event was introduced at Salt Lake City 2002.
Speaking of gold medals... We checked. He's human.
"It's a lot of emotions that are going through your mind when you're doing the last 100 metres but, yeah, it couldn't be a better way to crown the Olympics with winning the 50K," Klæbo said.
The Norwegian athlete has won gold in all six events he competed in at these Games.
But the 50-kilometre race especially mattered to him.
"In Norway, we say that if you're going to become a man you need to win the 50K, and today we did," he said.
Canada's skip Brad Jacobs after winning curling gold medal, 'celebrating that win is so special'
Canada's men's curling team defeated Great Britain 9-6 to captured the gold medal at Milano Cortina 2026.
Jacobs said it was an honour to skip his team to gold in a white-knuckle win over Great Britain.
"I'm proud of the guys. I'm proud that we were able to hang in there throughout that whole game. To see the looks on their faces at the end, celebrating that win, is just special,” he said.
Jacobs won gold in 2014 skipping a different squad. It’s also the second Olympic gold for Marc Kennedy and Ben Hebert, who won in 2010 with skip Kevin Martin.
"I don't have many words. The feeling's crazy. Sixteen years ago we did it, and we did it again today,” said Hebert. “It feels great to be standing on top of the podium today.”
For Brett Gallant, today’s result tops the bronze he won with Brad Gushue’s Canada rink four years ago in Beijing.
