Cale Makar scored with 1:44 left in the second period to even the men's Olympic hockey gold-medal game at 1-1.

He's been the best Canadian in the draw today, winning 72.73 per cent of the faceoffs he's taken. Horvat is a career 54.4 per cent on faceoffs in the NHL.

We talked earlier about how faceoffs have been a problem for Canada over this tournament. Expect to see more of Horvat on key draws, given his ability in the circle.

The crowd in here just erupted after the goal from Cale Makar.

After being at the centre of a pileup earlier, Makar was able to drill one in. 

It re-energized fans after that Canada power play where the team was unable to score.

There were some tense moments at the end of that period for Canada, including a puck that rang off the crossbar behind Jordan Binnington.

But Canada emerges without further damage.

It's 1-1 as we near the end of the second period.

Trying to decide whether to attend church or watch the game? This church in Nova Scotia is letting people decide for themselves.

I'm Molly MacNaughton, a reporter in Bedford, N.S., this morning at the Bedford United Church.

Dozens of people of all ages are gathering in a room watching the hockey game on a TV mounted to the wall. Some are staying just for the church service. Many plan to move back and forth. The atmosphere is getting louder by the minute as they cheer on Canada. People are dressed in red, wearing Canada jerseys, drinking their hot coffee and eating cookies and Timbits.

In an Instagram post the church said, "Come for the game, stay for worship — or join us for both!"

This isn't the first time the church has hosted the Olympic gold-medal game. They did the same thing for Canada versus Sweden for Sochi 2014.

Not a huge surprise, but Connor McDavid is leading all Canadian players in time on ice through two periods of this game. He has played 14:14 so far.

Defenceman Cale Makar trails him (13:24), followed by McDavid's linemate Nathan MacKinnon (13:14).

In Cole Harbour, N.S., the hometown of Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, the Big Leagues Pub & Eatery is at full capacity as fans pack in to cheer on Canada. 

There were a couple of good looks there, but Canada emerged from a lengthy 5-on-3 advantage without a goal, after some solid play from American (and Winnipeg Jets) goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.

It's still 1-0 U.S., with less than eight minutes left in the second period.

Canada will have more than a minute and a half with a two-player advantage after back-to-back penalties to the U.S.

They're trailing the U.S. 1-0 halfway through the second period here.

A huge opportunity for Canada, which has the top power play in this tournament. (The U.S. Has been perfect on the penalty kill, though.)
