As we wait for overtime, let's talk about the great chances Canada had in that period.
Perhaps none bigger than the one Nathan MacKinnon had with an open cage. He hit the post.
That's one he'll be seeing for a long, long time if Canada loses this game.
Canada's leading the Americans 41-26 in shots in this 1-1 tie.
We are heading to overtime because of course we are.
Canada and the U.S. Are tied 1-1 after 60 minutes of play.
The Canadians have outshot the Americans 41-26, but Connor Hellebuyck has been difficult to beat.
We’ll have a full intermission here, followed by a 20-minute 3-on-3 period. Next goal wins.
A reminder that it has been exactly 367 days since Connor McDavid won the 4 Nations Face-Off in overtime against the Americans.
After 49 seconds of 4-on-4, Canada will have more than a minute of power-play time, after U.S. Forward Jack Hughes went off for high sticking.
A tense moment here for the Canadians. They'll have to kill a double-minor penalty here from Sam Bennett, who was caught high-sticking Jack Hughes.
It certainly pauses some of the momentum Canada had throughout this third period.
If it's tied after 60, we'll have a full intermission, followed by 20-minute 3-on-3 OT periods until someone scores.
No shootout in the gold-medal game.
Connor Hellebuyck makes incredible paddle save to keep game tied
American goaltender Connor Hellebuyck used the paddle of his stick to stop Canada's Devon Toews in the third period, to keep the men's Olympic gold-medal hockey game tied at 1-1.
We're waiting for a game winner from somebody here in the final period of regulation.
Connor Hellebuyck just had a huge save on Canadian defender Devon Toews, who will likely be thinking about that opportunity for a long time to come. The puck just skirted through the crease in front of the goal line.
I'm Jennifer Yoon reporting out of the Real Sports Bar & Grill in downtown Toronto.
The crowd here started lining up at 7 a.m. ET to catch the gold-medal hockey game.
Some fans told me they were so nervous about the game, they literally lost sleep last night over it. Despite the early start, the mood in the bar has stayed electric — if tense at times.
Many fans say they're missing Sidney Crosby on the ice, but they're confident Team Canada can come through with a win.
Drew Doughty says the "nerves are out."
With two periods down, the veteran player says the team needs to "just go out there and play the exact same way we played in that second period: get in front of that goalie, get some goals and obviously be tracking hard and keep 'em out of our net."
Doughty said Team Canada's been "playing on our toes," getting changes and making the U.S. Tired in its defence zone.
"We're getting pucks to the net and we need to do that for the third, too."
Prime Minister Mark Carney looked pretty stressed while watching this tense game from a bar in Chelsea, Que. This morning.
Same, Mr. Prime Minister, same.
Canada outshot the Americans 19-8 through that second frame. Of course, Canada finally broke through with Makar's goal to tie it.
There were a lot of great chances for the Canadians in that period. Unfortunately for them, U.S. Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was on point.
Here's a look at the shot chart from the second period. On the left, in blue, you can see the Americans' shots on net.
On the other side, you can see a flurry of red. Those are the Canadian shots on net, including 12 that were blocked by the Americans.
That photo really tells the whole story of that period, and of Canada's desperation to get on the board.
