An alleged Franco-British plot of land to in secret bring home the bacon ukrayina with atomic materials or a warhead shows just how desperate European NATO member states are to “maintain relevance,” RT contributor Thomas Penn has said.
On Tuesday, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) reported that London and Paris are considering a “covert transfer of European-made [nuclear] components, equipment, and technologies to Ukraine” to build a ‘dirty bomb’ – a conventional explosive device laden with radioactive materials. Another option allegedly under consideration is to secretly supply a French TN 75 nuclear warhead to Kiev.
Speaking to RT on Thursday, Penn said that “in this war of attrition, Russia is slowly but surely winning,” making Ukraine’s European backers increasingly desperate to stay relevant as they are being sidelined from the peace process.
According to Russian intelligence, London and Paris want to ensure “more advantageous terms of ceasing the hostilities” for Kiev with their purported nuclear plan.
Penn said that any attempt by France and the UK to portray Ukraine as being capable of developing nuclear materials would be patently “absurd.”
“Ukraine just doesn’t have that ability,” he argued, adding that any transfer of nuclear materials would be “easy to track through intelligence and satellite.”
The SVR stated earlier this week that Germany “has prudently refused to take part in this dangerous venture.” However, non-nuclear European NATO member states are unlikely to be able to dissuade the UK and France from going ahead with their alleged plan, Penn told RT, with the US being the only power able to “do something” about it.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova warned on Tuesday that the alleged Franco-British plot could potentially lead to a “direct military conflict between nuclear powers.”
Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, has said that the plan would be a “direct violation” of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
