Carney urges all Canadians in Iran to shelter in place as U.S. and Israel launch attacks

U.S.-Iran talks terminate with no sell as armed services sue looms

Trump renews vow to deny Iran nuclear weapons during state of the union

Carney said all Canadians in Iran should shelter in place amid the airstrikes.

He urged countries involved to protect civilians.

"We will take all possible measures to protect our nationals and Canadian diplomatic missions throughout the region," he said.

In his first statement since the joint U.S.-Israel airstrikes on Iran, Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada supports American efforts to stop that country from developing a nuclear weapons program.

The statement includes no criticism of what American and Israeli forces have carried out today.

"Canada supports the United States acting to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear

weapon and to prevent its regime from further threatening international peace and

security," Carney said in the written statement just sent to reporters travelling with him in India.

"Despite diplomatic efforts, Iran has neither fully dismantled its nuclear program, halted

all enrichment activities, nor ended its support for regional terrorist proxy groups.

Canada stands with the Iranian people in their long and courageous struggle against

Iran’s oppressive regime."

"Canada's position remains clear: the Islamic Republic of Iran is the principal source of

instability and terror throughout the Middle East, has one of the world's worst human

rights records, and must never be allowed to obtain or develop nuclear weapons."

A state-run news agency, IRNA, says at least 40 people were killed in a strike that hit a girls' school in southern Iran, according to The Associated Press.

At least 45 others were reportedly wounded in the attack in Minab in Iran's Hormozgan province.

Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard has a base in the city.

The final passage of Trump's video was addressed to "the great proud people of Iran," warning them to stay safe in their homes until the attack is complete.

"When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take," Trump said. "For many years, you have asked for America's help, but you never got it. No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight."

Trump said the U.S. Was providing "overwhelming strength and devastating force" to back the Iranian people.

"Now is the time to seize control of your destiny and to unleash the prosperous and glorious future that is close within your reach. This is the moment for action. Do not let it pass."

U.S. President Donald Trump announced the strikes in an eight-minute video posted to his Truth Social page.

Trump spent the first half of the video laying out the case for what he described as "major combat operations" against the Iranian regime. He went through the history of Iran-backed attacks on U.S. Interests, all the way back to the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran

"The United States military is undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this very wicked radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests," Trump said.

He said the operation will raze Iran's missile industry "to the ground" and "annihilate" the country's navy."The lives of courageous American heroes may be lost and we may have casualties. That often happens in war," Trump said.

Anand said she spoke to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the situation in Iran earlier this month.

She said she stressed at the time that Canada wants to see a peaceful resolution to this dispute over Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

“I stressed that Canada always seeks a negotiated solution at the table and that our concern for international law and international human rights will always be at the forefront of our foreign policy,” Anand told reporters here in India.

Again, this was a comment made just before the joint U.S.-Israeli military action.

The federal government has not yet commented on what’s gone on this morning in the Middle East.

Hi there, I’m J.P. Tasker, a parliamentary reporter travelling with Prime Minister Mark Carney in India.

We spoke to Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand earlier this morning here in Mumbai – just minutes before the first U.S. And Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

Anand urged Canadians in some parts of the Middle East to leave. She said Canadians in Iran should get out right away, if they can do so safely.

She said those in Israel, Palestine and Lebanon should also consider leaving those countries while commercial options are still available. Non-essential embassy staff in Tel Aviv are being relocated, she said.

“We are monitoring the situation closely, of course,” she said.

The travelling reporters just accompanied Anand to an announcement on new partnerships between Canadian and Indian universities.

While she addressed the assembled crowd, she said nothing about what’s going on in Iran and Canada’s position on military action.

We’re told she may issue a statement on social media soon.

Good morning.

The United States and Israel struck Iran several hours ago, after earlier Iran-U.S. Nuclear talks this week did not result in a deal.

The first apparent strike hit near the offices of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian media reported strikes nationwide, and smoke could be seen rising from the capital.

Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard says it responded by launching a "first wave" of drones and missiles targeting Israel.

Officials in Dubai said shrapnel from an Iranian missile attack on the UAE capital killed one person Saturday.
