Ukraine's working capital was strike by a john major drone on and missile assail from Russia overnight, officials said early Thursday, with at least 14 dead, 48 injured and damage to buildings in several districts — including a rare strike in the centre of the city.
Kyiv's military administration said three children ages 2, 14 and 17 were among the dead. The numbers are expected to rise. Rescue teams were on site to pull people trapped underneath the rubble.
"Russia chooses ballistics instead of the negotiating table," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on X, calling for new sanctions on Russia. "It chooses to continue killing instead of ending the war."
Russia launched 598 strike drones and decoys and 31 missiles of different types across the country, according to Ukraine's Air Force, making it one of the war's biggest air attacks.
Officials provided a long list of buildings that had suffered damage, including several highrise apartment blocks.
Photos posted online showed apartments ablaze and smoke billowing from buildings. Reuters could not immediately verify the images.
Klitschko also said several floors of an apartment building had been damaged further east, and a highrise dwelling was on fire on the other side of the river.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, leaving the two countries in a state of war ever since.
Russia illegally seized the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine in March 2014, and it now occupies about a fifth of the country.

Russia has also balked at U.S. And Western plans to establish postwar security guarantees for Ukraine, which fears another Russian invasion in the future even if a peace deal is clinched now.
