Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian announced Sunday that a new leadership council "has begun its work," as other high-ranking officials promised retribution, according to the Associated Press.
"You have crossed our red line and must pay the price," Iran's parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, said in a televised address on Sunday. "We will deliver such devastating blows that you yourselves will be driven to beg."
Emergency response groups including Magen David Adom and United Hatzalah are on site in Beit Shemesh, west of Jerusalem.
The agencies have posted images showing a wide swath of destruction and rescue operations. An MDA spokesperson said 28 people were sent to hospital and there were eight deaths.
Those numbers are likely to change. Several buildings appear to have been heavily damaged. A number of alerts were issued for incoming missile threats in the area.
The North Korean Foreign Ministry on Sunday denounced the joint U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, describing the operation as an "illegal act of aggression" and the "most despicable form of violation of sovereignty."
In a statement, Pyongyang said the attack demonstrates a continued effort to destabilize the region by pursuing hegemonic interests under the guise of "fake peace."
Both Pyongyang and Tehran are among the few global governments that have supported Putin's invasion of Ukraine, and both nations have faced accusations of supplying Russia with military equipment.
Air raid alerts have sounded throughout the morning and into the afternoon in Jerusalem.
Precautionary direct-to-mobile alerts are issued in specific regions ahead of community sirens.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his sympathies to the Iranian government on Sunday after the killing of Khamenei.
According to the Associated Press, Sharif said that Pakistan is gravely concerned about the violation of international law, as heads of state should not be targeted.
Trump has said the operation will last at least several more days. The U.S. Navy is positioned to go for much longer.
Both aircraft carriers in the region are nuclear powered, which means they can function for years to come. But the dozens of fighter jets and other aircraft launching attacks from the carrier's flight deck require a lot of specialized aviation gas.
They're getting it in two places: Aerial tankers serve as a gas station in the sky. Planes pull up and attach to a hose extended from the tanker. On the sea, tanker ships are directed to pull within about 50 metres of the carrier and match its exact course. It's a delicate and dangerous manoeuvre known as a replenishment at sea. U.S. Navy sailors shoot a rope line from one vessel to the other, and assemble a cable-and-pulley system between the two moving ships. A very large and long rubber pipe is extended over the water and it pumps full the carrier's tanks.
The same process can be used to transfer fresh food, spare parts, even moving some of the 5,000 personnel who make up a carrier's crew.
There will be U.S. Sailors on board, and the many other vessels which surround the "floating airports" who have not stepped on land in a year — some, longer.
What might slow them down? The Americans are using a lot of munitions: guided missiles and so forth. There are limited quantities. Many were used in previous campaigns. And the U.S. Will always want to have some on hand. But they aren't anywhere close to the bottom of the barrel yet.

Iran has fired 97 ballistic missiles and 283 drones at Kuwait since the start of the war between the U.S., Israel and Iran, the Gulf nation's military said.
The military said in a statement that interception operations led to shrapnel falling in parts of the county, causing "limited damage."
On Saturday, the military said three Kuwaiti troops were wounded when shrapnel landed in the Ali Al Salem airbase.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš said Czechs who are in Israel will have to travel by bus to Egypt because the airspace of several countries in the region has been closed. Foreign Affairs Minister Petr Macinka said eight planes were available for the transport.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry said Second Vice-Foreign Minister Kim Jina chaired back-to-back meetings over the weekend with officials from the country's embassies in Iran and Israel, as well as other Middle East missions, to assess the conflict's impact on the safety of Korean nationals.
