Al-Istrabadi went on to wonder how Prime Minister Mark Carney could say he supports the strikes in Iran.

He pointed to Carney's speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, last month. "Carney seemed to lament the fact that the rules-based system was being destroyed by the United States," he said. "So how is it that Canada now supports this action without any legal justification?"

If countries say that Russia's Vladimir Putin acted illegally in Ukraine, Al-Istrabadi said he doesn't see how they can support Trump’s attacks on Iran.

"They both violated the same basic norms," he said. "Customary international law depends very much on what states say it is. So when states start to accept what is currently a lawless use of force, it is actually the norm itself that is degraded."

Earlier today, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified strikes on Iran, saying it was "abundantly clear" that if Iran came under attack from anyone, it would respond by attacking the U.S. Trump was right to go first, Rubio said.

"That is the stupidest justification for going to war I have heard in my 63 years," Feisal al-Istrabadi, a lawyer and former Iraqi ambassador to the UN told Ian Hanomansing in an interview from Bloomington, Ind.

"That is the justification for the families that have lost members of the armed forces over the last 24 hours? It is mind-blowing to me as a United States citizen."

Al-Istrabadi said that under the UN charter and international law, there are only two legal uses of force: self-defence and when the Security Council has authorized the use of force.

"Every other use of force, including the current use of force in Iran, is illegal," he said. "The law is really not very complicated."

The U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia is recommending American citizens in the kingdom shelter in place immediately, and is "limiting non-essential travel" to any military installations in the region, according to a post on X.

The kingdom's defence ministry said in a post on X on Tuesday that the U.S. Embassy in Riyadh was hit by two drones, resulting in a limited fire ‌and some material damage, citing an initial assessment.

What’s happening at the Iran-Turkey border crossing?

Some Iranians have been crossing the border into Turkey as the attacks continue, making the journey on land because airspace over Iran has been closed.

"Iran is done. Iran is done," he said. "Iran didn't care for its own people and now people aren't supporting Iran. The situation is so messed up … only God can help."

A man going only by his first name, Sam, said his family left its home in Tabriz in the middle of the night.

"Things are hard," he said.

Since Saturday there has been a concern about when or if the Axis of Resistance — Iran's proxies in the region — would start getting involved. That was answered when Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel early Monday morning.

"We warn again and again, the Israeli hostility without any response from us cannot proceed." That was an official Hezbollah statement and Israel has been responding with waves of attacks in Lebanon.

Israeli strikes have hit at the heart of the financial hub for Hezbollah and Al-Manar, the Hezbollah-aligned broadcaster. The questions now: How far does Hezbollah go? And what about the Houthis in Yemen?

It's interesting to hear the U.S. Describe this as being potentially a five-week-long campaign. A few things may determine that:

There are some consequences to Iran's unprecedented strikes against U.S. Targets in other Gulf states. Iran may hope that dragging them into the conflict will put pressure on the U.S. To stop.

It puts those countries in a difficult spot. Many had been pushing for diplomatic ends, but now they are trying to decide whether they need to get more involved directly.

Qatar, for example, shot down two Iranian fighter jets, saying it is actively defending itself. Now it is saying they will go after Iran actively if the attacks continue.

The rest of the world is seeing huge economic shockwaves, with rising prices for oil and any goods that typically move through the Strait of Hormuz, which is effectively at a standstill now.

In terms of Canadian travellers and permanent residents in the region, officials say there are at least 85,000 Canadians scattered around the Middle East with a huge proportion in the U.A.E. As we've reported, Canadians are being urged not to travel to the region.

We are not yet at the point where Canada is talking about evacuations. But we are only three days into this war. Think about how much has changed already.

It's been a slightly tense hour and a half or so. There were just alerts here in Tel Aviv and in the Dead Sea region that sent people, once again, scrambling into their shelters. That came mere minutes after there were reports of two explosions near state broadcasting facilities in Tehran.

There were also explosions in a southern neighbourhood of Beirut. The Israeli military had issued evacuation orders for both of those locations.

Ballistic missiles were then fired by Iran into Israel.

The Israeli Air Force said on X it has begun striking "command centres and weapons storage facilities of the terrorist organization Hezbollah" in Beirut.
