The resolution of this crisis requires a commitment to a "broader political solution" and diplomatic engagement "to prevent a wider and deepening conflict," Carney said.

Canada is prepared to pursue this aim with like-minded countries and the parties involved in the conflict, he said.

Carney said the U.S. And Israel have acted without consulting the UN and/or its allies, including Canada, which has led to a growing conflict that is evolving quickly and threatening civilian lives.

Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for all parties involved in the conflict in the Middle East, including the U.S. And Israel, to quickly de-escalate hostilities.

He added that Canada is ready to help reach that goal, though he did not immediately say whether that would be in the form of diplomatic or military assistance.

Carney is speaking from Australia, where he is in the midst of a visit to strengthen trade relations. He spoke first in French, then English.

Other "clearer paths" that appear possible include Iran becoming a military dictatorship, or some kind of compromise with the U.S. And Israel that allows the Islamic Republic to retain power, Razavi said.

"Or there could be a complete regime collapse and an implosion of the system, which would possibly create a power vacuum.

"And that would open up really, really deep vulnerabilities for either foreign occupation or a loss of territorial integrity."

Who will succeed Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei after his death?

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in U.S. And Israeli airstrikes on Saturday, Iranian state media said. It remains unclear who the country's next supreme leader will be. Sahar Razavi, director of the Iranian and Middle East Studies Center at California State University Sacramento, breaks down some of the possibilities.

With the rural area in the thick of state of war, it's hard to escort "a lot of good paths" for Iran to eventually form a democracy, said Sahar Razavi, an associate professor at California State University, Sacramento and director of its Iranian and Middle Eastern Studies Center.

Razavi said she is skeptical of Trump's claims that he and his administration are primarily concerned with having Iranians decide what's best for themselves.

"To me, it's difficult to see how Iran could emerge from this as a meaningfully democratic system if it is happening at the end of the barrel of a gun, so to speak."

Danon also responded to claims by Iran's ambassador to the UN that the U.S. And Israel are targeting civilians, saying it was actually Iran that was doing so.

"Israel, on the other hand, strikes military targets, command centres, missile launchers. This regime strikes innocent civilians, and that is the difference," Danon said, adding that Israel regrets any loss of civilian life.

Danon said he had a message for "those who choose terror against Israel."

"Understand this: we will find you, we will hunt you down and we will eliminate you."

Israel's Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon said Hezbollah's attacks "will not be allowed to stand."

"We will act decisively and we will finish the job," Danon said during a news conference at the UN headquarters in New York a few minutes ago.

He said Israel is calling on the Lebanese government to restrain Hezbollah.

"Take control, act now, to prevent further escalation," he said.

Israeli border communities have not been evacuated despite officials saying the threat posed by Hezbollah was great enough to send troops into Lebanon.

Early today, Defence Minister Israel Katz posted on social media that soldiers were sent in to "advance and seize additional controlling areas in Lebanon and to defend the border settlements from there."

Israel had previously established posts in Lebanon during hostilities following the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks on the country led by Hamas.

Israel continues strikes on what it says are Hezbollah targets in Lebanon

Fighting continued on Tuesday between Israel and the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah, with explosions ringing out in areas of northern Israel near the border. Iran-backed Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel after the killing of Iran's supreme leader over the weekend. Israel has responded with strikes in Beirut and additional troop deployments to southern Lebanon.

Loud explosions and the buzz of drones can be heard in areas of northern Israel near the Lebanon border as Israel and Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah continue to trade fire.

Hezbollah is accused of launching projectiles at Israel for the second straight day. The majority were intercepted or fell in open areas, Israel said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told the people of Lebanon that Hezbollah is dragging them into a war that is not theirs. Brigadier General Effie Defrin said today that Israel, in retaliation, had hit more than 100 sites across Lebanon used by Hezbollah.

Defrin said Israel has also killed Daoud Ali Zadeh, the commander of the Lebanese arm of the Quds Force, a branch of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, in a strike on Tehran.
