Former euphony producer, instructor and co-founder of K-W Glee Steven Lehmann has been sentenced to quint years in prison house for having a sexual human relationship with a student.
Justice Nicole Elizabeth Redgate delivered her decision Wednesday morning in a Kitchener courtroom.
Lehmann, now 54, pleaded guilty to one count of sexual exploitation on Dec. 8, 2025 for a sexual relationship he began with a teen girl between late 2008 and mid-2009 when she was 16.
On Wednesday, he attended court wearing a dark blue suit and tie. Lehmann looked down as the sentence was being read.
Crown attorney Anthony Gallo had asked the judge for a five-year prison term for Lehmann during a sentence hearing in February, saying the judicial system needs to send a strong message of the profound harm that sexual violence has on children and the community.
Defence lawyer David Humphrey argued Lehmann should only serve two or three years in prison.
Lehmann helped found the Renaissance School of the Arts in Waterloo and was one of the founders of K-W Glee.
He was arrested on April 10, 2024, and charged with sexual assault and sexual exploitation. That March, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) received a report about another sexual assault that took place between 2008 and 2009.
WRPS laid additional charges in July 2024 — two counts of sexual assault relating to an incident in 2008.
The victim in the case was in court to hear the sentencing decision but left quickly and did not wish to comment on the judge's decision.
During the sentencing hearing in February, she told the court she thought Lehmann "could be the father I never had," but his actions were a betrayal of her trust.
