Cassandra Kulukundis has won the inaugural best casting Oscar. She is best known for her long-term collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson, casting every film of his since 1999's Magnolia.
The award was presented by Chase Infiniti, Paul Mescal, Gwyneth Paltrow, Delroy Lindo and Wagner Moura, who thanked their casting directors in their introductory speech.
The makeup and hairstyling team of Frankenstein can now add an Oscar to their award-winning season. The winning team of Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey are taking the stage now. If you didn't know, Samuel and Furey are Canadian.
During his acceptance speech, Hill gave lead actor Jacob Eloridi a shoutout for spending 400 hours in the makeup chair for his transformation into Frankenstein's monster.
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is nominated for nine Oscars, including best supporting actor, set design, sound and best picture. At an Oscar event earlier this week, Canadian producer J. Miles Dale shared his pride for what he called his "film family."
"A lot of us have been together 25 years or more — we came from tiny acorns and hopefully, mighty oaks have grown."
This is Kate Hawley's first Oscar win and her first nomination for best costume design.
She and director Guillermo del Toro are longtime collaborators, having worked together on 2013's Pacific Rim and 2015's Crimson Peak together. (Both were shot in Toronto!)
For Frankenstein, del Toro wanted punk rock instead of Dickensian tropes, so Hawley drew on Art Nouveau influences, Tiffany archives and David Bowie's Thin White Duke persona.
In a Devil Wears Prada moment, Anne Hathaway and Anna Wintour presented the award. Hathaway will be in the sequel of Devil Wears Prada later this year.
In a massive recreation of Sinners' iconic "barn-burner" scene, the cast of this year's vampire smash hit saw everyone from star Miles Caton belting out the lyrics to ballerina Misty Copeland celebrate Black art throughout the ages.
Even though we knew it was coming, actually seeing it was a surprise — to both the audience in L.A., and us at our home base in Toronto. When movie villain Jack O'Connell appeared to hobknob with the performers, we had an audible cheer here.
And when they reached the end of the performance, the auditorium in Hollywood gave their first standing ovation.
Maciek Szczerbowski and Chris Lavis have won the Oscar for their animated short The Girl Who Cried Pearls.
"Thank you, Canada," they said in their acceptance speech.
Stop-motion animation got them the Oscar win, but the Canadian co-directors say it's a frustrating craft.
Szczerbowski said getting three seconds of output is a good day in the studio.
This may have been the most sure bet of the entire night — and it's the first Canadian win of the evening. Toronto's Maggie Kang directed surprise juggernaut KPop Demon Hunters after being forced to shop it around between Sony and Netflix, as the former sold the distribution rights to the latter due to its doubt over it finding an audience.
It also solidifies the popularity of K-pop as a genre in North America. Blackpink's Lisa became the first K-pop singer to perform at the Oscars last year, while Kpop Demon Hunters' Golden is expected to win best original song later tonight.
"For those of you who look like me, I'm so sorry that it took so long to see us in a movie like this," Kang said in her acceptance speech. "But it is here, and that means that the next generations don't have to go longing."
Channing Tatum and Toronto-born Will Arnett are on stage to present the award for best animated feature. Arnett hosted the Governors Awards back in November.
A laugh from HQ in Toronto: Jane Lynch made a cameo in a series of ads interrupting Conan O'Brien after he announced the Oscars are moving to YouTube in 2029.

Regardless of the winner, this field pushes back some of the "category fraud" accusations from last year.
With less than 15 on-screen minutes, Madigan had the lowest screentime of all nominees — though none superseded the stars of their respective films. Last year, best supporting actress winner Zoe Saldaña was on screen more than Emilia Pérez co-star and best actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón. Then, best supporting actor winner Kieran Culkin had nearly identical screentime to A Real Pain co-star Jesse Eisenberg, with both essentially functioning as the film's leads.
