Backstage, Maciek Szczerbowski told the rows of journalists how he and Chris Lavis came up with the style of their characters during COVID-19 times. He said he was at home building the puppets' bodies, while Chris was at his house making the heads.
"We knew that — let's say, next Friday — we were going to meet up in the back alley of my house and see how it’s going."
Once they met up, they realized the heads were twice as large as they needed to be for the bodies, or that the bodies were half as small.
"We totally s–t the bed. We did the wrong thing, but there was no way of going back, so we decided we were going to stick with it and we'll have to make a film with puppets with gigantic heads.”
Ahead of the ceremony, Conan O’Brien said there would be a “very powerful” tribute to his friend, the late actor and director Rob Reiner. Reiner and wife Michelle Singer Reiner were found dead in their L.A. Home, hours after attending a holiday party at O’Brien’s house. The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, recently pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.
Hollywood has said goodbye to some big names in cinema over the past year. In the past few months alone, the film industry has mourned the loss of screen legends.
That includes Diane Keaton, who won best actress in 1978 for Annie Hall and was nominated three other times. Robert Redford was nominated for four Oscars as an actor, director and producer — and won two, including best director in 1981 for Ordinary People and an honourary Academy Award in 2002. Robert Duvall was nominated seven times and won best acto in 1983 for the film Tender Mercies. Canadian comedy great Catherine O’Hara starred in beloved movies like Home Alone and Beetlejuice.
Others names to watch for include James Van Der Beek, Eric Dane, Robert Carradine, Bridget Bardot, Sally Kirkland, Udo Kier, Diane Ladd and conservationist Jane Goodall.
Unfortunately, the Academy cannot include everyone in its In Memoriam segment, so we’ll be watching to see whose names don’t appear this year.
Sean Penn is now a three-time Oscar winner. He just won for his supporting role in One Battle After Another, but he's not there to accept the award. Presenter Kieran Culkin accepted it on his behalf. Previously, Penn won Oscars for his performances in Mystic River and Milk.
In an incredible surprise, the Oscars saw a tie: The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva both took best live-action short film.
It's only happened six times before this — the rules state that winning titles must share the exact same number of votes. The last tie was in 2013, when Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty tied for best sound editing.
Two People Exchanging Saliva was the projected favourite, which would have prolonged a general lack of upsets so far tonight. The black and white drama set in a dystopian France envisions a society where kisses are outlawed and punishable by death. The Singers is an adaptation of a short story by Ivan Turgenev about an impromptu singing competition at a pub.
Maggie Kang and the KPop Demon Hunters team are at the microphone in the press room — gracious and pleased, producer Michelle Wong said the story speaks to everyone: “We were courageous, determined and willing to make this movie as amazing as it is. We are very happy.”
Part of Conan’s opening monologue — poking fun at the sheer amount of memes that use Leonardo DiCaprio — called out the One Battle After Another actor sitting in the audience to create another.
Reddit user MD_FunkoMa said, “I'm glad that Leo was game with being a meme tonight.”
O'Brien poked fun at the mobile vertical video format in a fake ad about a new company transforming old classics like The Godfather Part II and The Matrix into vertical, AI-driven formats, cutting off all the action.
Cassandra Kulukundis has won the inaugural best casting Oscar. She is best known for her long-term collaboration with director Paul Thomas Anderson, casting every film of his since 1999's Magnolia.
The award was presented by Chase Infiniti, Paul Mescal, Gwyneth Paltrow, Delroy Lindo and Wagner Moura, who thanked their casting directors in their introductory speech.
The makeup and hairstyling team of Frankenstein can now add an Oscar to their award-winning season. The winning team of Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel and Cliona Furey are taking the stage now. If you didn't know, Samuel and Furey are Canadian.
During his acceptance speech, Hill gave lead actor Jacob Eloridi a shoutout for spending 400 hours in the makeup chair for his transformation into Frankenstein's monster.
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein is nominated for nine Oscars, including best supporting actor, set design, sound and best picture. At an Oscar event earlier this week, Canadian producer J. Miles Dale shared his pride for what he called his "film family."
"A lot of us have been together 25 years or more — we came from tiny acorns and hopefully, mighty oaks have grown."
