Hoping to win an Oscar pool? We'll be keeping track of all of tonight’s winners right here, so you can easily see who has claimed glory.

Back in the press room, Toronto-based makeup artist Jordan Samuel gives props to his co-Oscar-winning colleague, make-up artist Mike Hill, who spent hours a day transforming Jacob Elordi into “the creature” in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, reiterating Jacob Elordi is “the most patient man on the planet."

“That was 10 hours in makeup … but for four to five of those hours, Jacob stood. He was not sitting in a chair and relaxing. So, hats off to him.”

At just 39, Ryan Coogler has already broken records and garnered widespread acclaim, directing both Black Panther films as well as Creed, a spinoff of the Rocky series.

But he wasn't always looking to be a filmmaker. Coogler originally went to college on a football scholarship and graduated with a finance degree. After a series of injuries, he decided he wanted to follow a different passion. During his undergrad, a teacher had noticed his creative writing abilities, pushing him to pursue screenwriting.

He began his master's degree at the University of Southern California, one of the best film schools in the world, and debuted his much-lauded first feature, Fruitvale Station, in 2013.

Fun fact: Michael B. Jordan has starred in all five of Coogler's features.

And finally, Sinners is on the board. It's nominated for 16 total tonight (the most of any film ever at the Oscars), so be prepared to hear more about it.

Taking the stage to accept the award for best original screenplay, director Ryan Coogler earned the night's second standing ovation — the first being for Sinners' live performance. You can really feel the populist, widespread love that people have for this film; that excitement just might be a predictor of the silent momentum that some have argued will push the film to a shocking best picture win.

If you were to ask me, I still think One Battle After Another will take it. But if that surprise happens, you would be able to point to this moment as evidence of what everyone in Hollywood secretly knew.

One Battle After Another, a film that Anderson said he began writing nearly three decades ago, is loosely based on the 1990 novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon.

The American author is known for his complex storylines, reclusivity and quirkiness, once allowing artist Laurie Anderson — no relation to Paul — to adapt his book Gravity's Rainbow into an opera on one stipulation: that it be scored only for solo banjo. "Some people have the nicest way of saying no," she recalled in a 2024 lecture.

This is actually Anderson's second Pynchon film. His first was Inherent Vice (2014), based on the 2009 novel of the same name. Joaquin Phoenix stars as the cannabis-smoking Doc Sportello, a private eye whose investigation leads him into the criminal world of 1970s Los Angeles.

One Battle After Another has its third win of the night — and if you're to believe the hype, it will be the first of many. I might have said it a couple times, but this, again, was one of the surefire bets of the night — all the contested categories (like best picture and best actor) are coming up.

This also marks a stunning sea change for director Paul Thomas Anderson; before this Oscars, he'd received 11 career nominations — and lost every single one. That put him only behind Bradley Cooper when it came to filmmakers at the Oscars with no wins.

He's up for three categories total tonight, with best picture and best director to follow. He's a favourite in both of those categories.

Backstage, Maciek Szczerbowski told the rows of journalists how he and Chris Lavis came up with the style of their characters during COVID-19 times. He said he was at home building the puppets' bodies, while Chris was at his house making the heads.

"We knew that — let's say, next Friday — we were going to meet up in the back alley of my house and see how it’s going."

Once they met up, they realized the heads were twice as large as they needed to be for the bodies, or that the bodies were half as small.

"We totally s–t the bed. We did the wrong thing, but there was no way of going back, so we decided we were going to stick with it and we'll have to make a film with puppets with gigantic heads.”

Ahead of the ceremony, Conan O’Brien said there would be a “very powerful” tribute to his friend, the late actor and director Rob Reiner. Reiner and wife Michelle Singer Reiner were found dead in their L.A. Home, hours after attending a holiday party at O’Brien’s house. The couple’s son, Nick Reiner, recently pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

Hollywood has said goodbye to some big names in cinema over the past year. In the past few months alone, the film industry has mourned the loss of screen legends.

That includes Diane Keaton, who won best actress in 1978 for Annie Hall and was nominated three other times. Robert Redford was nominated for four Oscars as an actor, director and producer  — and won two, including best director in 1981 for Ordinary People and an honourary Academy Award in 2002. Robert Duvall was nominated seven times and won best acto  in 1983 for the film Tender Mercies. Canadian comedy great Catherine O’Hara starred in beloved movies like Home Alone and Beetlejuice.

Others names to watch for include James Van Der Beek, Eric Dane, Robert Carradine, Bridget Bardot, Sally Kirkland, Udo Kier, Diane Ladd and conservationist Jane Goodall

Unfortunately, the Academy cannot include everyone in its In Memoriam segment, so we’ll be watching to see whose names don’t appear this year.

Sean Penn is now a three-time Oscar winner. He just won for his supporting role in One Battle After Another, but he's not there to accept the award. Presenter Kieran Culkin accepted it on his behalf. Previously, Penn won Oscars for his performances in Mystic River and Milk.

In an incredible surprise, the Oscars saw a tie: The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva both took best live-action short film.

It's only happened six times before this — the rules state that winning titles must share the exact same number of votes. The last tie was in 2013, when Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty tied for best sound editing.

Two People Exchanging Saliva was the projected favourite, which would have prolonged a general lack of upsets so far tonight. The black and white drama set in a dystopian France envisions a society where kisses are outlawed and punishable by death. The Singers is an adaptation of a short story by Ivan Turgenev about an impromptu singing competition at a pub.
