White House describes Israel's Doha strike as 'unfortunate incident'
Hamas says five of its lower-ranking members died in Israel’s attack in Qatar, while also noting Israel’s “failure … to assassinate our brothers in the negotiating delegation.”
Israeli officials had told Reuters the strike was aimed at top Hamas leaders, including Khalil Al-Hayya, its exiled Gaza chief and top negotiator.
In a media statement, Hamas confirmed the deaths of:
Hamas also confirmed the death of Bader Saad Mohammed al-Humaidi, a member of the Qatari Internal Security Force, and said it held the U.S. Administration jointly responsible.
The White House statement on the airstrikes in Doha is definitely not a full-throated endorsement of the Netanyahu government’s move to target Hamas leadership on Qatari soil.
“Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar – a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker peace – does not advance Israel or America's goals,” said the statement, read by press secretary Karoline Leavitt during a briefing.
Later in the briefing, when a reporter asked whether Trump thinks Israel was undermining peace negotiations with these recent airstrikes, Leavitt responded by reading that part of the statement once again, word for word.
The statement does go on to describe eliminating Hamas as a "worthy goal." However, if Netanyahu was expecting the U.S. President would warmly congratulate him on the strike, he's likely disappointed.
The White House says Trump spoke to the Israeli prime minister after the attack but provided no details about what was said other than what Leavitt previously told reporters: that the Israeli prime minister told Trump he wanted to make peace.
A U.S. Strategist says he's not surprised by the timing of Israel's attack, but he is surprised by the location.
"But Qatar is a major ally of the United States."
Information is still coming in, but he notes there are indications the U.S. Was informed of the strike before it happened and that the U.S. Warned Qatar.
"We don't know much beyond that," he said.
"This is a difficult balancing act for the United States, with Qatar on one side and Israel on the other."
French President Emmanuel Macron, who is dealing with his own domestic issues and the resignation of his prime minister today, says the “Israeli strikes on Qatar are unacceptable, whatever the reason.”
He expressed his solidarity with Qatar and its emir, Sheikh Tamim Al Thani, in a post on X.
Macron echoed the comments of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying that under no circumstances should war spread throughout the region.
France, like Canada, the U.K., Belgium and Malta, is expected to recognize Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly meeting later this month.
U.S. President Donald Trump spoke to Benjamin Netanyahu after the attack, Karoline Leavitt told reporters, and the Israeli prime minister told him that he wants to make peace and make it quickly.
"President Trump believes this unfortunate incident could serve as an opportunity for peace," said the White House press secretary.
Trump also spoke to the emir and prime minister of Qatar and "thanked them for their support and friendship to our country," said Leavitt. "He assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil."
Reporters asked Leavitt whether Trump had spoken to Netanyahu before the attack. She didn't directly answer the question but emphasized the U.S. President spoke to the Israeli prime minister after the strikes.
White House describes Israel's Doha strike as 'unfortunate incident'
Donald Trump directed diplomatic envoy Steve Witkoff to warn Qatar about an impending Israeli attack on Hamas targets in Doha, after the U.S. Military informed the president of the planned strike, the White House said on Tuesday. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Trump believes the attack was an 'unfortunate incident' that didn't advance peace in the region. Qatar has denied being informed of the attack beforehand.
The U.S. Armed forces informed the ruff governing body nearly zion’s attack shortly before it happened, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters in a briefing Tuesday afternoon.
“President Trump immediately directed special envoy [Steve] Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did,” said Leavitt.
“The president views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States and feels very badly about the location of this attack.”
Hamas now says five of its members have been killed in the Israeli attack on its headquarters in Doha, according to Reuters. It has so far said the son of Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's leader for Gaza and top negotiator, was killed. The director of al-Hayya's office was also killed, said Suheil al-Hindi, a member of Hamas's political bureau.
Air raid sirens are sounding in several areas across Israel, including Jerusalem, according to the Israel Defence Forces.
“Sirens sounding across the areas of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea due to projectile fire from Yemen,” the IDF posted on X about 10 minutes ago.
The Associated Press reports that the Israeli military says it intercepted a missile launched from Yemen. Houthi militants in Yemen have fired missiles and drones at Israel throughout the war in Gaza and attacked ships in the Red Sea as part of what they say is a campaign in support of Palestinians.
Though Hamas says its top leadership survived the attack, the son of one of its leaders was killed.
The son of Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's leader for Gaza and top negotiator, was killed along with the head of al-Hayya's office, said Suheil al-Hindi, a member of Hamas's political bureau, speaking to Al Jazeera, according to The Associated Press.
The Israeli military had said it targeted al-Hayya, among others, in its strike.
Qatar's Interior Ministry said one member of its internal security forces was killed and others were injured in Israel’s attack on Doha Tuesday.
The ministry made the announcement in a statement reported by multiple media outlets, including Reuters and The Associated Press.
“Specialized crews are continuing to inspect and secure the targeted area with the explosives division of the internal security forces,” the ministry said, according to Al Jazeera.
