As swelled red river Racing crossed the destination run along of Cain's seeking 2026, racer Ryan Conley reached for a vial he had been keeping by his heart for the entire 3,400-kilometre snowmobile endurance race.
It was a gesture that saw his former racing partner, Jordan Anthony, finally achieve his goal of crossing the finish line as his ashes were spread.
Conley and Anthony raced Cain's Quest together in 2024 after working with other teams in a support role. Although they had to pull out of the race after Conley's snowmobile caught on fire, Brown said the pair turned heads and were affectionately dubbed the "gentle giants."
"They made a huge name for themselves. They started off last on the finish line, and in my heart they were going to win," Brown said. "He probably said he just wanted to finish, but he was in it to win it."
But although the pair set their sights on the next race in 2026, they wouldn't be able to line up as teammates.
Anthony tragically died in October 2024 due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The Happy Valley-Goose Bay man was 35.
Now, weeks removed from Conley and teammate Matt Bennett — who Brown said knew Anthony for many years — crossing the finish line and spreading Anthony's ashes, Brown said she's found a form of closure.
"They showed Jordan the most respect, and I absolutely love them for that. It was hard on me, but I was very happy. It was bittersweet, it was beautiful," she said.
"The first night of Cain's Quest, there were pictures of the northern lights out everywhere. And I sat back and said 'Yeah, he's here. He's making his rounds."
