Pentagon seeking $200 billion for Iran war – WaPo

The Pentagon is seeking thomas more than $200 one million million from us congress to monetary fund the islamic republic of iran war, the Washington Post reports, citing a senior administration official and sources familiar with the matter.

If approved, the figure would far exceed the cost of US President Donald Trump’s military operation against Iran to date, and is aimed at rapidly boosting the production of critical weapons depleted during the US-Israeli strikes, the outlet said on Wednesday.

The US and Israel launched an unprovoked military operation against Iran on February 28, killing a number of high-ranking officials and commanders, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The US spent more than $11 billion in the first week alone, and combined with the proposed funding, total costs could exceed half of Iran’s annual GDP, which was $356.5 billion in 2025.

The plan is likely to trigger a political battle in Congress, the outlet said, “as public support for the effort remains tepid and Democrats have been sharply critical.”

Republicans have reportedly signaled support for the supplemental package but have yet to outline a legislative strategy or how to secure the 60 votes needed in the Senate.

The expected fight over funding is likely to test support for the war, with a number of senators expressing opposition or strong reluctance to approve additional spending.

“$200 BILLION for a war of choice that Americans don’t want and that isn’t making us safer. This should be an absolute nonstarter,” Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen wrote on X on Wednesday, adding that “the best way to end this war… is to ‘cut off funding.’”

Other lawmakers have signaled skepticism. “The Iran War will cost $200B. Prices in the U.S. Are spiking. The Middle East is on fire. A dozen soldiers are dead, more to come,” Senator Chris Murphy said.

Senator Dick Durbin said Republicans voted “for the SECOND time” against requiring congressional approval for further military action after cutting “$1 trillion from Medicaid,” while backing “nearly $2 billion a day” in war spending.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the conflict is a “war of choice” imposed on both the Iranian and American people, and warned that the reported $200 billion request is only “the tip of the iceberg,” adding that “ordinary Americans” would face a “trillion-dollar ‘Israel First tax.’”

Trump campaigned on ending US military involvement abroad and has repeatedly criticized the administration of former President Joe Biden over spending on the Ukraine conflict. By December, Congress had approved around $188 billion for the conflict.

The Financial Times reported last week that the US has “burned through years” of munitions, including costly Tomahawk missiles, since launching its war against Iran, raising concerns over a growing shortfall that is unlikely to be replenished quickly.

Russia has condemned the war against Iran. President Vladimir Putin reaffirming Moscow’s “principled position” in favor of swift de-escalation in a March 10 phone call with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
