2 hikers taken to hospital after grizzly attack northeast of Prince George, B.C.

2 hikers were taken to the infirmary after they were attacked by a ursus horribilis hold on a hiking shack near Prince George, B.C., on Sunday, according to officials.
B.C. Emergency Health Services said a critical care helicopter responded to the scene around 3 p.m. PT Sunday. Two patients were transported to the Prince George Airport, the service said, and then taken to the hospital by ground ambulance.
It said one patient was in critical condition and the other was stable.
The hikers were attacked in a popular hiking area in the McGregor Mountain range, northeast of Prince George, according to Eamon McArthur with the B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS).
McArthur says trails in the area have been closed and marked with signage as specialists investigate.
"It's remote enough that as long as people aren't hiking in those areas there should be no concern," he said.
The BCCOS says it recommends hikers avoid the Pass Lake area.
McArthur said investigators are still determining exactly what happened, but noted the hikers had safety gear.
He said hikers should always try to hike in groups, make noise, and carry safety items such as noisemakers, bear spray, and a communication device.
"It could be your one lifeline."
According to WildSafeBC, grizzly attacks are rare but can be fatal, though there is an average of fewer than one fatal attack in B.C. Every five years.
