Its impact was significant, leaving eight people dead and injuring one child. Courtesy - Gender rulesWhat was the epicentre of the quake?Friday’s earthquake had its epicentre in the Hindu Kush mountain range, about 150 kilometres (90 miles) east of the Afghan city of Kunduz, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the US Geological Survey.Fourth major earthquake in the last four years in AfghanistanAfghanistan has been dealing with major natural calamities. In August 2025, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck a remote mountainous part of eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 2,200 people, trapping residents under rubble. Most casualties were in Kunar province, where people typically live in wood and mud-brick houses along steep valleys.In November the same year, another 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Samangan province in northern Afghanistan, killing at least 27 people and injuring more than 950. It also damaged historical sites, including Afghanistan’s famed Blue Mosque in Mazar-e-Sharif and the Bagh-e-Jahan Nama Palace in Khulm.In October 2023, a 6.3-magnitude quake, followed by strong aftershocks in western Afghanistan, killed thousands.Tremors felt in Delhi too, residents say ‘bed was shaking’India’s National Center for Seismology confirmed that the impact of the quake was felt in Delhi as well. In a post on X, the NCS wrote: “EQ of M: 5.9, On: 03/04/2026 21:42:57 IST, Lat: 36.398 N, Long: 70.878 E, Depth: 150 Km, Location: Afghanistan.” A resident said her bed and fan were shaking when the earthquake struck. “When the earthquake struck, I was sitting in the room and felt the bed shaking. When I looked up, the fan was shaking too. When I came out, I saw that people around me were also scared,” a woman told ANI. Kabul on high alertHafizullah Basharat, a spokesperson for the Kabul governor, said the eight people who were killed belonged to the same family and died when a house collapsed on the outskirts of the capital.Afghanistan’s Health ministry spokesperson Sharafat Zaman said Kabul and provincial health authorities had been put on alert.Kabul is roughly 290 kilometres (180 miles) southwest of the epicentre. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from areas closer to the epicentre. The region is remote, and it can often take several hours for local authorities to relay information back to Kabul, AP reported.
