'There’s no question’ Toronto snowstorm will have big impact on Monday commutes: city manager
After Toronto sees nearly 60 cm of snow, winter storm moves east toward Atlantic Canada
Because like you, we’ve got some shoveling to do.
Stay safe and stay warm out there.
Johnson mentioned more snow is on the way for the city, and Environment Canada’s forecast concurs.
A 40 per cent chance of flurries is expected all the way until Friday this week, according to the weather agency.
Keep your furry friends in mind today, too. They’re likely having a hard time getting around — especially those of the stubby-legged variety. This is Derek Grozinger, who is out for a walk with his puppy, Stevie.
Stevie is a daschund who is five months old … and sadly, is too short to trek through the snow, Derek says.
Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning that Toronto will feel the whip of winter wind that will make it feel like -25 out there.
Fantastic.
Those winds, set to gust up to 50 km/h, are expected to hit this evening and continue until the morning.
Plowing operations will be completed by today or early Tuesday, Paul Johnson says. He says major snow removal will begin as early as Wednesday, although some removal is already underway.
Johnson says the storm clean up will take days. It was a major one, though Chow joked that: “I don't think we need to bring in the army.”
Over 1,300 buses are out in the city and streetcars remain running, says Josh Colle, a TTC executive.
Over 80 subway cars are running, but parts of the line with outdoor tracks are turning trains back, as TTC staff work to remove the snow by hand, he says.
City manager Paul Johnson says operations are well underway to clear city roads. He says a major change to the clean-up effort was targeted snow removal and shifting resources in real time.
He says staff have been working to help clear TTC stops, as portions of the subway remain out of service.
“We are doing a better job and are further ahead than we would have been if this type of event had happened last year,” says Johnson. He says the city is expected to get a bit more snow in the next couple of days.
The Finch LRT is down again as of 1:06 p.m. ET, this time due to a brake issue on the light rail line.
Shuttle buses are once again running between Finch West and Humber College stations.
The mayor is taking time to thank staff working to clear the roads, as well as Torontonians helping each other clean up from the storm.
“Toronto is at its best when we look out for one another,” says Chow.
Seven warming centres remain open, says Chow, who noted that 117 additional shelter spaces have been open since Friday.
Libraries remain closed today and will re-open tomorrow.
The mayor says to check the city’s website for real-time updates.
