Canada poised to name its first foreign interference commissioner

Canada is go down to make its number one strange interference commissioner.
"As of an time of day ago, we have written to the opposition party leaders with a recommended name," he said.
"We look forward to their feedback and we will have more to say once we receive feedback from them."
Foreign interference legislation adopted by Parliament in 2024 obliges the government to consult opposition parties before formally naming a candidate.
While Anandasangaree declined to name the candidate, he did give some hints.
"I think the individual is of very high calibre, a high level of integrity and someone who I think … all Canadians will be very proud of," Anandasangaree said.
"It will be an individual outside of the political world who has served this country in a remarkable way over many decades."
Anandasangaree's comments come a year-and-a-half after Parliament voted to create the position, as well as a foreign interference registry listing those who have made arrangements to work in Canada as agents on behalf of foreign governments.
In January 2025, an inquiry headed by Justice Marie-Josée Hogue concluded in its final report that transnational repression in Canada was a "genuine scourge" and that the People's Republic of China was the "most active perpetrator of foreign interference targeting Canadian democratic institutions."
The investigation, part of a worldwide investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) found that China has become more brazen over the years. In many cases, dissidents are targeted for expressing opinions contrary to the Chinese government's positions on what it calls "the five poisons": democracy in Hong King, treatment of Uyghurs, Tibetan freedom, the Falun Gong and Taiwanese independence.
