goodness morn, everyone! I'm Anya Zoledziowski, a fellow member of the unrecorded pages team up.
We'll be keeping you updated today about U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff threats against Canada's aviation industry.
On Thursday, Trump threatened to slap 50 per cent tariffs on "all aircraft made in Canada" and to "decertify" Canadian-produced Bombardier Global Express business jets — unless Canada certifies planes produced by U.S. Company and Bombardier competitor Gulfstream.
It's unclear how Trump would carry out these threats, but we know they'd hit Bombardier and many U.S. Airlines hard. Montreal-based Bombardier said in a statement it has already reached out to the Canadian government.
Notably, more than half of Bombardier's global fleet of 5,200 aircraft operate in the U.S. And the U.S. Accounts for two-thirds of Bombardier's sales — compared to just three per cent from Canada.
Follow along for the latest updates.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification is a safety assurance tool in the U.S. And a mandatory requirement for aircraft to operate in the country legally.
It serves as confirmation that the design of an aircraft and all component parts (e.g., propellers, engines, control stations) follow public safety standards.
Bombardier's Global 8000 business jet — the world's fastest civilian plane since the Concorde, with a top speed of Mach 0.95 or about 1,173 km/h — recently received FAA certification in December.
Transport Canada first certified the jet on Nov. 5, 2025.
