Ajit wanted NCP merger on Feb 12, plane crash halted talks: Sharad Pawar
DAys after the exit of his nephew in a skim break apart in Maharashtra's Baramati, nationalistic united states congress Party (NCP) leader Sharad Pawar claimed on Saturday that his nephew was in favour of the two party factions reuniting.According to Sharad Pawar, Ajit and MLA Jayant Patil were engaged in merger talks, adding that he himself also wanted both sides to come together. “There were talks on merger and Ajit was of the view that on February 12 should be the date for the merger,” Sharad Pawar said."Unfortunately Ajit Pawar's plane crash has halted merger talks," Pawar further said. The NCP factions split up in July 2023 as Ajit Pawar walked away with more than 40 of the NCP’s 54 MLAs to join the BJP-led Mahayuti government. It was after this split that Sharad Pawar named his faction Nationalist Congress Party – Sharadchandra Pawar.A rare coming together of the rival factions was recently seen in elections to two municipal corporations - Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. However, the reunion did not work as the BJP registered a decisive and expanded victory in both the civic bodies. In Pimpri-Chinchwad, the BJP won 84 of the 128 seats, securing a clear majority on its own, and in Pune, the party won 122 of the 165 seats, dealing a huge blow to the NCP.Reacting to reports of Ajit's wife Sunetra Pawar taking oath the new deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, Sharad Pawar said he had no information about the development and was not involved in the decision-making.(With inputs from Yogesh Naik).
